Ok, I'm on the home stretch of finishing my glass work and hull refinishing. I am wondering how the fast guys like to finish or prep their hulls. (other than buying a new boat every year)

If you had to sand, buff, polish, and wax your boat, what is the best method in YHO to insure your hulls are fast. 1200 grit paper then cut and wax?

Your thoughts are appreciated.

1000 or 1200 wet or dry.

3M rubbing compound (with a machine)

3M Perfect-It II (with a machine)

Wax

McLube Hullcote

But it's mostly psychological. One blown tack would negate any incremental benefit from doing all of that.

I think what Matt is trying to say is, "Spend less time on the hulls, and more time on the water!" My Bravo's hulls have sped up considerably using this theory! :)

I fully agree with both of you, but, I am here now refinishing the hulls and I wanna do it correctly while I am here. Besides, it's winter and we're not sailing that much right now anyway

and......the guys that win are the ones who don't blow a tack..........and I still need all the help I can get provided I don't blow one. :D

There has been several studies & some reports are available on-line about the best surface finish. Without going into the details here, 1200-1800grit wet n dry, but only rub in the direction of the water flow. Gently hose down the surface & you know the surface is clean when the water does not separate. The hard job is keeping it clean! When sailing at National & World Titles, we used to 'polish' our hulls & foils this way before every race. (but as MBounds states, one small mistake whilst sailing on the course will negate a perfect hull finish!) Good luck.
