I was just reading on the HCANA website about the passing of a Hobie sailor and the article stated that he was an "IHCA Life Member."

I'm wondering how does someone become a Life Member? The HCANA site lists several membership options, but none of them are Life Member. Is life membership something that is awarded to certain members? Just curious about what is involved with becoming a Life Member.

Basically, if you have to ask, you can't afford it. :D

It's an honorary designation. The only life members are (were):
Hobie L. Alter (deceased)
Hobie P. and Stephanie Alter
Jeff and Laurie Alter
Paula Alter
Sandy Banks
Wayne Schafer
Rich Jeffries (deceased)
Paul Ulibarri
Ron & Shirley (deceased) Palmer

Basically, it's for the people who were instrumental in the early years of the class. Ron & Shirley were the last life members made about 10 years ago for their contributions to the class.

I would have thought Carlton Tucker would have been a Lifetime Member.

Carlton has several perpetual trophies named after him, including the HCA's Sportsperson of the Year.

Carlton passed away only six years after (1998) the HCANA started a membership program (1992). I'm not sure the life category was even established by 1998. Hobie's sons paid membership dues just like anyone else until they stopped racing actively in the late 2000s.
