Post subject:  Trifoiler instablity, we were foiled at flying!

Dear Trifoiler forum,
We sailed the trifoiler this weekend in Sandy Hook Bay in New Jersey. The wind was excellent 15 - 18 mph and the water choppy. With two people the boat seemed very unstable. It seemed as if it was riding too high on the ama foils and then dropping into the water. We made some rudder adjustments to reduce the angle of attack. When one person went alone we had two runs that were quite stable. The wind started whistling in the wires, so we were obviously going well at that point.
Any suggestions?

Arthur,

Did your sensor rise above the water just before the foils rose to the surface? If so, this is common on the leward foil. It is called sensor rising. It is caused by the downforce on the leward foil in combination with the geometry of the foil control system. . It can usually be compensate/elliminated by lengthening the shock absorber adjustment and thus creating more downforce n the snesor.

15 to 18 mph should be Ok for 2 people.

Regards
Frank.
