Thanks Matt for your response. One last question on this issue (promise): would you recommend or do you see any harm in installing longer bolts in the inserts, as was previously suggested, if the stock bolts are too short? Thanks!

Would depend on the threaded inserts in the hull. I'd be surprised if they were not nearly fully threaded in, but maybe there was a fastener problem on some boat(s) if they are short. You would not want to bottom out in the insert and you would not want to drill through the back.
