Post subject:  Cat cabin repair (window hinges)
I need two new hinges for the cabin windows. The holes are not drilled standard and hobie doesn't have any parts listed forthe piano hinges?


Also what are the jam cleats for on top of the cabin?

I will review this post again on Monday when I head into the office.

The only cleat on top that is "factory" equipment is the jib furling line cleat.

Yup looked there. found a 36800081 and a 36800091 as the window assembly's but nothing is mentioned of the hinge. Must be part of the window?

I looked at inventory today. No replacement hinge is available from Hobie. The hinge came as part of the window from a vendor. It was commonly refered to as Piano Hinge, so you should be able to find based on that description.

This quick Google search result looks like the stuff:

I've talked with a few companies. The guys you listed look best because they are not drilled yet.

Most Piano hinges will be drilled on 2" holes spacing. But hobies were drilled on 3 3/4" holes center to center. So i can't use the standard replacements.

Post subject:  What a Disaster!
SO i tried making my new hinges today. cut the blank stainless to length. clamped the old hinges to the new ones, marked, and drilled the new holes.

At first it seemed a little tight against one side, but it was still working. so i siliconed it all up. Bolted it down(two holes in the window didn't line up). And then as i tightened it it got further and further out of alignment to where it was impossible to close.

SO i unbolted everything and switched the hing to the other side(there was a slight offset in my stock hinges) That door fit well in the frame. but two of the window holes didn't line up and a third felt stripped. SO i tried drilling new holes to align better. first hole was drilled and piloted but i stil got a "crack" when i went to tighten it down, the second hole i guess the originals were drilled at an angle. Drill bit broke, glass chipped in the bottom edge. now three of the windows holes are unusable and the window is visibally pulling away from the hinge when resting in the open possition.

WHAT A DISASTER. My cat cabin was FLAWLESS prior to me attempting to redo these hinges!!! I feel like a pile of dog leftovers right now.... :oops:

Measure with a micrometer, mark it with chalk and cut it with an axe...

The originals are smoked plexiglass.

Very dark smoke. I think they are virtually Opaque. wood is an interesting concept. I ended up jbwelding inside the cracks and clamping the widow overnight.

Looks to be holding so far but wait till some drunky needs to get there camera out of the hold and leans on it. LOL
