Any suggestions/advice on reducing 'weather helm' to a manageable amount, in addition to those found on pg 29 of the Hobie 21SC support Manual, would be appreciated. Thanks! |

Check the rudder and cams FAQ... I would bet that the cams are not holding the rudders forward in the castings when loaded. http://www.hobiecat.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=467 |

What type of rudders do you have? I was having a lot of issues with weather helm on mine, but I narrowed it down to the rudders after replacing the entire cam system. I'm not sure exactly what material they were made of, but they feel like plastic and could easily be flexed by hand. I salvaged a pair of EPO's off of a H18 and resurfaced them. My boat now handles like a Cadillac, smooth and easy. |

After suffering heavy weather helm for decades, I sent away for a shortened pigtail on the forestay assembly, allowing me to bring the mast a little forward, thus bringing the centre of area of the sails forward. I still had a lot of weather helm. This week, I just took the rudder assys off and reworked everything. I took a dremel to the cams so they unlock easier, moved the locking plates to the centre, redrilled the rudder holes a little forward to get more rudder area forward of the rudder pins. I'm sitting here waiting for wind to check out the improvement. I'd like to know if any H21 SE owner has moved the forestay bridle to the forward hull fittings (the ones right at the bows). I know/assume they are there to rig the spinnaker/screetcher sail options, but wonder if they are as well backed as for the forestay. Using them would improve weather helm. Any experience? |

Well, after reassembling the rudders, and installing, I see that the rudders actually touch the bottom of the hulls, so, I have canted them forward to the max. And, lo and behold, the boat is a dream to sail again. Weather helm almost non-existent. I'm still curious about using the forward fittings for the forestay bridle, but it isn't any longer a necessity. |
