New to Hobie 21 sailing on Lake Ontario and I have been told to change my jib rigging to that of the self tacking smaller jib (almost blade) as on the Tiger 18. Reason given was the large jib on the 21 will pull the nose down as we go through the large waves on the lake. Opinions welcome!

I had Randy Smyth build me a storm jib many years ago that works great in high wind and big waves. We only use it when I don't have enough crew.I have probable used it 12 times in 21 years of sailing my 21SE and I am glad that I have it in my inventory. The storm jib is considerably smaller than my genoa and the fabric is what he called "bomb proof".Maybe half the time I sail this big cat,I am alone in 5-15mph winds. The 21 is a very comfortable and sable boat.I can even us my huge spinnaker without crew, but it is a headache to control everything all at once. Once the wind is over 15mph,I need crew.

If I change anything in my sail inventory,I would like to add some sort of new larger forward sail that would be furling like my genoa but be rigged on where my spinnaker tack blocks shackle to on a new bridle. Is that called a Code Zero?My spinnaker is the old style down wind chute and works good only straight down wind.I would like this new sail to have a wider range of use and simple to deploy.

I suggest you have a storm jib made.It is a small sail and would relativity cheap.I would be glad to pull it out of my sail tube and send you it's size and /or a photo of it rigged too.

Good luck with your 21SE.....
