Post subject:  Rudder Pins breaking

We have a hobie 21 and have broken most of West Marine's supply of rudder pins. We "pop" the rudders as we come up on shallow water/beach and yet there are times when the pop out "themselves" while sailing and correcting it is quite difficult on the water. Wondering if there is something we are missing about how to keep the rudder pins from breaking.....

So... what are the pins you get from West Marine? Can't be correct for a Hobie since they are not a Hobie dealer.

I'd recommend some 3/8" stainless rod. Cut to the same length as your aluminum pins and drilled. The drilling is the hard part. Stainless is fairly soft but it galls the drill bits. Because the boards are smallish on the 21 most folk rake the mast back and load up the rudders. I didn't break a pin in 18 years. I did break a rudder though.

Are you really breaking Stainless rudder pins? I have bent a few never had one break. Something is wrong in your boat set up. Hard to believe the back of your boat is still there. I have bought many rudder pins from Murrays never had a problem good people they know their Hobie stuff. The pins do sometimes wear and get a slight bend. I have replaced mine once in 20 years. I do not have a local Hobie dealer nearby. Even if I did Hobie mostly makes those plastic boats now

Post subject:  Replacement Rudder Plungers

Thanks to mmiller! My mistake. The rudder plungers came from Fogh Marine, not West Marine ... and they are rudder plungers, not rudder pins.

Again, I'm talking about those little black plastic things that rest on springs in the rudder assembly. Whenever we pop the rudders, these things are supposed to plunge, but they break!

What would happen if I machined one out of stainless steel?

And...if I stay with plastic, where is the best place to buy official Hobie replacement parts?

Thanks for your help,

Sea2

Best place to buy in Toronto? Fogh Marine.

Breaking a plunger would be very unusual. The plungers should be lubricated with grease where they interact with the cams. If the are folding over rather than retracting inside the casting as the cam pushes down, you may have some kind of wear or poor molding issue with the castings.

ah so stainless steel ruddder pins not breaking
I have destroyed a few plungers and more cams than I would care to admit
Sailing in really really shallow water in high winds and trying to force the rudders down does not help Always keep spare parts of all kinds handy in your Hobie Hell Box. It will save a vacation or a good day sail. And again the people at Murrays have some Hobie parts and are a good place to get standing and running rigging IE wires Just wish I still had a good local dealer
Hobie weather in 120 days
