Should I be Taking My Mast Down?

Post subject:  Should I be Taking My Mast Down?
Got the Hobie 21 (1989) sitting in the boat yard waiting for May.

We're in Toronto where things will get pretty cold over the winter. Come January, -15 C is not unusual, -30 is extreme. In short, winters are pretty mild.

Right now the mast is up. Is it okay to leave it up, or should I be taking it down for the winter?

You should step it down. The rig when exposed to wind will stress and wear the wires, step etc. Let alone the chance of some higher wind capsizing the boat.

I sometimes leave my mast up especially if it is on my trailer or my floating dock The boat is tied down and the mast rotator arm is secured with shock cord. I do live in quiet cove which is protected form high winds and has almost no waves at all Thats why they call it Quiet Cove @ Lake Norman
I did have my old HC 16 blow off a trailer it flew about 25 feet in the air and landed on top of a jon boat minor scratch only damage The boat was about 2 weeks old at the time and yes the mast was up It would have gone further but the winch cable grabbed the boat

Not to mention the unnecessary UV exposure on the Comptip.

Not that the sun shines at all in winter this far north.
