In figure 41 of the Hobie 21 manual there is a stainless bar that is connected to the mast on two sides and goes over the boom. What is it used for and how is it rigged? Also when the out haul line breaks on the boom (and it will and did) how on earth is it replaced? Cheers, Roger |

I didn't look at the figure you quoted, but it sounds like the mast rotator. It controls the amount the mast can rotate. The mast can bend more side to side, depending on how the diamond wire are tensioned, than front to back. More rotation equals a flatter sail with heavy mainsheet tension. It's something you develop a feel for. More rotation when you are overpowered, and less when you need more power. The mainsail has a shape built into it with a curve at the front (luff). Pulling the luff curve forward flattens the sail. This is more easily done by bending the mast, which bends more side to side. The outhaul line is one of those things I figure out when I need to. |

Pretty sure the outhaul on the 21 is the same as on the 18. To remove the car, drill out the two rivets at the aft end of the boom, release the outhaul line from the cleat, and slide the assembly out of the back of the boom. Be careful not to lose the plastic rollers for the car. sm |
