Here is a recent photo of my new top down furling spinnaker designed by Randy Symth. My catamaran is a vintage 1989 Hobie 21SE. And new (last Christmas) jib sail is from Chip @ Whirlwind Sail. My old main sail (1994) is from Don @ Salty Dog

Note the beverage holder I added to the wing. I installed two per wing and two on the tramp.

I think that is Bob Curry in the back ground on his A cat....

Please tell me you're bringing this to New Buffalo or Muskegon this summer for a CRAM event

Thanks for the invite!

I am recovering from a total knee replacement which means, I am learning to walk again kind of stuff. So this 2018 sailing season my focus is to rebuild my strength and agility.

So, let me just attend and keep out of the way of the boats racing. I will update my calendar with CRAM events and make an effort to join in. CRAM will be a good fit for us logistically. :)

This is how I keep my boat above the rocky shoreline at my sailing club.

Where did you get the drink holders? You just lace the lines around the part sticking. Slow the tramp, or are they shallow enough to not hit the lines? How do you anchor the rollers on the beach?

I like the spin setup; looks like a clean install.

Where did you get the drink holders?...I had them custom made by a friend @ my sailing club...pricey but worth it. I purchased the mesh, vinyl, glue and thread from Sailrite. There are two drink holder per wing seat and two more on the tramp on the back corners right where I sit on light wind days.

How do you anchor the rollers on the beach?....they are very heavy and hold it self in place unless the lake has a lot of chop. Once I installed cradles on the trailer forward cross bar I ended up with an extra set of heavy duty double rollers that I made back in '89. So I mounted them on a 2" X 10" treated board. I can move the cradles to match any other boats hulls center line.So them work for my 16 too. My wooden cradles are also heavy enough to remain where I put them, right at the waters edge. I have actually sailed right on to the rollers and landed on the wooden cradles much to everyone surprise. :D
It is amazing what a few beers allow you to do....

Did you shorten your jib, or are the 21SE jibs that short?
How easily does your spinnaker furl? What do you use to transmit the torque to the top of the spin to furl it? Like a rod or a stiff cable?
I really dislike the snuffer tube system I currently use, it takes forever to set up, and it often jams up when I douse the spinnaker.

Dorienc asked,

Did you shorten your jib, or are the 21SE jibs that short?

No, my new jib is the same size as my original. My sail inventory does include a storm jib that I rarely use...maybe 10 times in 30 years.

It takes maybe 15 seconds to furl my 404 square foot spinnaker.

What do you use to transmit the torque to the top of the spin to furl it? Like a rod or a stiff cable?

This system uses a anti-torsion cable, I think it is a Harken cable.

I have an original Prosail spinnaker (with the Salem logo on it) that came with my boat back in 1989 and it was so difficult to use that I might have used it 20 times in 30 years. The old style spinnakers sailed only down wind within a narrow range but this new spinnaker has a huge range including windward more like a code zero............ :)

This new design is wonderful when solo sailing.
