My H21SC came with these shroud extenders https://www.strictlysailinc.com/product/hobie-cat-17-solo-upright-system-part-1263-copy/. It looks like the mast ends up being supported by the quick release pin. My question for all is.. is this safe? Are these Quick release pins designed to bear the weight of the mast?

The boats came from the factory with shroud extenders. I am not sure about the specifics on the strictly sail ones, but the hobie ones work great. It would be quite the challenge to right the 21SC without the extenders.

So while I can't answer your strength question, I can tell you that you are really going to want some kind of shroud extender.

Don't know the manufacturer of the pins. But you can look up similar items on line to get a good guess as to the breaking strength and tensile strength. Double shear load from one such is 9200 (they don't say whether Kg or Lb). http://aircraftproducts.wicksaircraft.c ... elease-pin

Conservatively, you would want the part to be able to lift the weight of the boat before breaking. Hobie is not known for under engineering rigging; so I wouldn't worry.

I have used the Johnson Hyfield type lever for my shroud extenders on my 21SE since it was new in'89. The quick pins have never fail. :D

Well I'm pretty sure that the ones on my boat where manufactured by Hobie. The link I posted was just for reference.

My bigger concern with quick pins is the pin falling out, not that it would shearing off. The hole it goes in could get deformed a little allowing th little ball to not keep the pin captive, or the ball could get stuck in the quick pin allowing the pin to fall out. Just my 2 cents.
