My clips are so tight that there's no way the paddle is coming out on its own. I do have a paddle leash just in case I drop it though.
I wanted to secure a stakeout pole by the paddle, so I added a section of 1/4" paracord between the two paddle clips. I drilled a hole through the webs in the bottom of the clips (there are holes molded into the top of the clips, but useless for this application), strung the paracord between, & knotted it tight at either end. Oops...first, I strung the cord through a Scotty 590 snap hook (or any suitable snap or carabiner). The cord hangs below the paddle & I can secure it over the paddle & stakeout pole by snapping the hook to the starboard handle or tri-eyes.
FREE BONUS RANT:
I HATE the glued on paddle clips. I find they are always interfering with whatever I want to rig. I don't know why they are so far fore and aft & would work just fine closer to the middle. I would prefer if they had molded a more traditional small paddle seat into the Hobie logo & used a small bungee as a retainer.
Just my $.02.
