I would use it only if I was leaving the seat home and going to stand-up paddle it.

I found that it makes the steering sluggish under normal seat/drive operation.

The fin is intended to be used for stand up paddle mode. Not necessary for use with the rudder. Upgrading to the larger rudder is a nice performance upgrade and helps with stability, turning and tracking:
