Sadly we no longer have a place at Bear Lake. We had many great years there and plan to return. Below is my original post from 2009...

Bear Lake has been a favorite sailing lake of mine. Over the years, I have sailed a Hobie 16, 18sx, Sunfish and Windsurfer on the lake and recently my Hobie Adventure (not an Island, though I wish I had one for this lake, it would be a blast). The attraction is the turquoise water, sandy beaches, wind and relatively small crowds on weekdays. Though weekends and holidays are very crowded on the beaches, the lake is still not too crowded.

The lake is approximately 20x7 miles and is rather open, so be careful, storms and big waves occasionally appear without a lot of warning. As a side note, this was the site of the Hobie 16 Nationals in the late '70's. There are numerous accommodations from large cabin rentals, campgrounds (with small cabins) and condo rentals.

Some of the pictures were taken prior to having our Adventures, but are included to give you a better idea of what the lake has to offer. We tend to launch on the south west beach, which is more desolate, but a little less crowded.

Hi Ya Ref
That looks like a great place to go sailing with a 16 or an 18, nice long reaches for days and not to choppy. Your Adventure looks really fast and make's me wish I had an AI too. Someday I hear they will offer a Fast Dry Tandem AI though so looking forward to that possibility even more.
Nice Golden.. but where is his boat  ?
Have fun

Hey Kep,

Yes it is great on both a 16 and 18. The greatest speed I have ever achieved on a sailboat was at Bear Lake with our 18sx, with a very strong offshore wind (big wind with only small ripples). Of course, if you are on the other side of the lake, the waves can get very large -- similar to what I have seen at Lake Tahoe. Because the water is slightly warmer than Tahoe and the beaches are more accessible and gradual, it is a lot of fun to play in the big waves on a kayak, especially a Hobie Mirage!!!

We'll be at Bear Lake next week, July 21 - 26. We love Bear Lake and go there often in the summer and also off months. When will you be there? Would love to see some Hobies in action and maybe go for a sail. I called for sailing lessons at Bear Lake Sails, and the girl that answered the phone didn't even know what a Hobie was. :?

Hello Linda P - I am here now. Will be here through Mid August and on the water every other day or so. I will be launching from either the south beach (near highway 30) or from the Garden City beach. Look for me with the white Adventure. I know what you mean about the lack of "Hobie" knowledge. Unfortuntately all of the rentals are power sports now, even the one that calls itself "Bear Lake Sails" (kind of funny). Hope to see you. Have a great time.

Your photo of the surf board sailing is amazing. Would it be OK if I used it on Bear Lake Convention and Visitors Bureau website at http://www.bearlake.org? If you have any objection or would like photo credits please go to our website and email us.
Thanks in advance! Ann Yearsley
