Post subject:  TX - Sunset Lake Park, Portland, Texas

Sunset Lake Park is on a small peninsula between Corpus Christi Bay and Nueces Bay at the south end of Portland, Texas. It sits just across the water from the city of Corpus Christi, Texas whose skyline is visible from several parts of the lake. The lake is an excellent place to kayak when the conditions of the two bays present serious dangers to small boats. It's protected status is ensured by the natural burm to the east and the elevated status of state highway 181 to the west. The lake is fed by a large culvert which connects it westward to Nueces Bay. As such it is subject to tidal activity. The lake supports a large number of shoreline birds, especially during the migratory seasons. Year round one can easily see great herons, rosette spoonbills, grebes and numerous other species. Sunset Lake is also rewarding to the angler who appreciates the aggressive redfish, speckled trout, drum and other shallow water fish which make the gulf coast their home. As a non-motorized body of water Sunset Lake can offer the kayak enthusiast a great place to go when the bays are just a bit more than what they might want to handle. - Roger
