Hey Kayaking Bob, Some where in your site, it says the TI version of the spray skirts are 4inches shorter than the AI version. Is this correct? Do you just lop it off the front. (My wife is quite a seamstress and has done a bit of upholstery, so I'm considering having her take a crack at it). Also you mentioned that all the shade cloth material you've used actually cut spray. I'm looking at a material called Phifertex it's kind of expensive but here in Michigan it's the only thing I could find. 38 bucks a yard. Is elected the more open mesh. In the description it does say that it provides 70% shade. I'd imagine that this is a scientific and mathematical calculation. In your experience will this cut the spray. Yes, the TI version is mostly just shorter. I'd take it off the front where it comes to a point and just readjust the outside cut so it's about the same width at the new front. We changed to Coolaroo brand shade cloth (an Australian product) a couple of years ago, available at Home Depot and Amazon. All the others we use to buy actually were manufactured by one company that sent it's production to China and the quality dropped to unusable. The major problem is it shouldn't stretch too much. Needs to hold it's form. The Coolaroo stretches up to 15%, which is great (sometimes seems almost too little stretch, when installing an AI Sprayskirt kit) I designed my Sprayskirts to stretch tightly. Tight enough to bounce a tennis ball off of it. I found when it is this tight, at the angles the kit mounts on the hull, that it stops the most spray and cause a small nose lift at speed. You can actually plane off the Sprayskirt in smaller chop at AI/TI sailing speed, giving some extra time to, adjust the trim of the boat (like when riding on a haka), reefing in the sail or just riding out frequent short gusts. And for when you might want the "mini-Sprayskirt" for rougher conditions while fishing or sailing long distances, a wire-tie on each side near the front hatch temporarily converts it. Just cut back off to go back to the full Sprayskirt when done. For normal sailing, where you can adjust your angle to the waves, by cutting waves at about 45 degree both up and down the waves, the full Sprayskirt works great. Good luck with your project. KB's suggestion of the 70% shade, Coolaroo fabric available at Home Depot (in Gardening section) or from Amazon is great. First time I went to HOPO, I went to the home decoration section and couldn't find it. Also, in that Gardening section with the shade cloth, they have plastic ties and "Locking Clips" which I like. these forums really have a wealth of info that I used to make these spray skirts. A bunch of info is on this thread here and a couple more below (thank you!!!) viewtopic.php?f=69&t=48522&p=223114&hilit=mini+skirt#p223114 viewtopic.php?f=70&t=7276&hilit=mini+skirt&start=285 I just picked up a TI with the intention of trying to involve my wife more and wanted to keep her experience a little dryer so wanted the spray skirt. I also just took this boat out again solo (which I will always be doing from the rear seat - my wife will be in the front seat) and was just real pleased at how dry I stayed. I didnt keep track of exactly what I did to make these but I cut the fabric to 50 inch by 18 inch and the skirt ended up about 49 inch by 15.25 with the wide spot in the triangle towards the rear. I hand sewed the whole thing and thought it was fairly easy.. but I also enjoy that sort of thing.. (yep, that is snow in the first picture.. pictures are from a couple days ago and its still early season here in Colorado. This was justa really fine - and dry - day)           This connection worries me a little.. The skirt will keep the ama from collapsing but I also want a weak link.. and also want it fast to setup

Nice Job! We have verified the 2015 AI fits with our AI kits and are waiting for the 2015 TI's to reach Hawaii to verify them. We also have worked on a Universal Sprayskirt Kit that will fit all Island boats, old and new, AI and TI and are waiting for the 2015 TI's to finalize them and update the instructions. |

Some pictures of what Ive ended up with for keeping my wife in the front seat dry (we are heading to San Juan Island in a few weeks and the water is is COLD). I always sit in the back seat of the TI and the spray skirts I originally made very quickly stretched out from collapsing an ama with the skirt all attached. Well.. I ended up really liking just being able to collapse the ama without worrying about the spray skirt so things evolved to just putting some parachute cord in the leading edge. This leaves the front of the skirt "floppy" but the skirts still work the same as before for reducing splash. In these pictures is also shown a lexan "dodger", an idea I got from a buddy. The spray skirt does most of the work, the dodger just a little but hopefully makes some difference.  "floppy skirt"     This last picture is why things ended up the way they are. I sit in the rear and collapse an ama from the rear seat every time I use this boat. No lines to worry about.. just collapse the ama.  Edit - the "floppy" spray skirt here will allow the ama to collapse in some sort of impact. Since I always sit in the back seat, I also have an "ama safety leash" that does keep the ama from collapsing in an impact. So to collapse an ama with the setup I have (even with the spray skirt attached), I just unclip the leash near where the brace attaches to the "ball" on the hull. Very easy to do from the back seat. The latest cut Sprayskirt (2016-). Sleek with less material up front but gives the same splash protection. Fits all Hobie Islands.
