A three foot piece of 1 1/2" Grosgrain ribbon works real well for that. But place it on the top of the batten. I tried it at the top of the mast, but in some conditions, it tied up the sail so it couldn't deploy. 
It adds color, and helps tell which boat is which at a greater distance. Kayaking Bob

I copied Kayaking Bob's idea with the ribbon, and it works great. It does help to make it extra long. I got a really lightweight mesh ribbon in the Christmas section at Wal Mart, so it flies in almost no wind. I have some ribbon type telltales sitting on the table beside me, but haven't gotten around to putting them on yet. The big ribbons up top work fine, but I do intend to put them on some day. Just need to acquire a round tuit.

I finally got around to putting mine on today. Also shown is the red mesh ribbon I mentioned earlier (thanks Kayaking Bob!). These telltales are not installed correctly. I got it exactly backwards. If you don't know what I did wrong at a glance, I'm not saying!
Now my paddle has only one use: going backwards. I bought the telltales at West Marine. |

Well, in my experience, that only happens on my wife's boat. I think it's something about the red ones. They're faster, you know.

The red tell goes on the port side the green one goes on the starboard side of the sail? Do I get a prize? 
Hmm.. on 2nd thought, kinda hard to figure out in the pic which side of the sail I'm looking at. The tell should actually exit from the slit in the center of the patch to make it work better - but that is minor. That's the ones I got from West Marine they give you like 7 red & 7 green tells with "stickeys" to attach them. |
