I just received the 2010 Hobie fall catalog and see a new steering knob assembly for the TI and all 2011 Mirage models. I have a 2009 AI, is there any way an 09 AI can be upgraded to use the steering knob?

Thks

The new handle is required to use the knob. You can update the steering handle, that requires a new stainless crank in the hull as well.

Matt,
Is the 2009 an "older AI"?
Do you think this a simple DIY project?
Any diagrams/photos out there anywhere?
Thanks,
Ger

I would say a DIY... We have no official kit or instructions yet.

Newer 2011 Adventures and AIs use the same longer handle as used on the Tandem. The deck is molded differently.

Thanks Matt. I'm attempting to order the parts now. There seems to be a slight hiccup with UK dealers' catalogues though. But if I can get the stuff, I'm going to give it a go.

Best regards

Ger

Say Matt,

I also be sporting an '09 AI and am interested in this mod as well.

Regarding the handle length... and to be clear, will the "Handle 81013001" fit and work on an '09 AI molded deck when used with those other updated parts?

81013001 is the standard length handle (same as previous), so yes, will work.

To be clear... the 2011 AI uses the same handle as the TI , which is longer... and will not work on older (than 2011) AI's.

I just received UK prices for the parts (not including postage):
81013001 STEERING HANDLE 2011 £14.99
8030126 SCREW 10-32 x 3/8 FLNG BTN HX £1.99
88991152 DOME DECAL SM HANDLE - H LOGO £2.99
88991235 DOWEL PIN 3/16 x 1-1/2" £1.99
81385001 WASHER 13/16 EDPM RUBBER £0.99
88991281 STEERING CRANK, AI/TI (2011) £26.99
H071 SPRING-STANDUP To be confirmed
88991355 KNOB ASSY. STEERING HANDLE £12.99
Total = £62.93 + ?
This equates to 100.63 USD + ? (Today’s rate).
Out of curiosity, I have compared the price of just the knob in US Dollars at today's rates i.e. $7.95 in the US, $20.78 in Rip-off Britain.

I'm not go to be taken for a mug. I'll just make do with the old style handle.

I ordered the steering handle 2011 and the steering knob to mod my 2010.
http://www.austinkayak.com/products/415 ... -2011.html
http://www.austinkayak.com/products/378 ... embly.html

The handle and knob from AK fit together. I ordered a second knob for my wife's 2011 AI and the knob will not fit the handle. The brass insert in the handle is too narrow a diameter to accept the threaded screw inside the knob.

She doesn't want the knob. Remember to ask first   so it is good it didn't fit or I would be removing it.

Sounds like my experience.

The new 2011 handle is great. But the Hobie knob I added does not screw in properly either. At least not all the way.

The bass inserts are mismatched for the screw, or vice versa. The SS screw goes in easily 1/4 of the way or more then meets resistance. I was able to retap it bit by bit with the power screwdriver.

It could simply be that the wrong screw was included with some knobs, but it seems as if the brass receiver is only partially tapped to the correct diameter.

Why not just order from a kayak shop or dealer in the USA and have them ship to you via FedEx or UPS? You'll pay the import duty ( if there is one) to the carrier. One hint I can give you is to order all the parts at once, from one source. That way you only pay one shipping charge, and only one of the recurring handling charges the freight forwarders charge to handle the customs clearance paperwork for you. Here, that's usually about $ 25 added to the cost of the shipping.

Will Austin Kayak accept non US bank credit cards and ship UPS? Most likely. If not, there are work arounds. Other vendors. Ship FedEx instead. Use bank transfer for payment, etc. but most US vendors will take care of this.

If you want, I can send you the name of the Hobie dealer in Florida that we use. I have imported two kayaks and a trailer so far from them. I've had them Fed Ex me turbo fins, an inflatable patch kit, etc. and it's been great service.

In fact, I have used the Florida dealer despite the fact that we have a Hobie dealer here on the island. He just doesn't seem to be intereseted in kayaks. I get better service from Florida.

Hey, I have to do the same thing in reverse to buy parts for my two 2005 Land Rover Defenders. They are not allowed to have Land Rover Defenders in the USA, that are newer than 1996 models. We have two 2005's and I do all my own maintenance. So I have to order my parts from the UK. It's a bit of a pain to work through the first time or so, but after you get the hang of it, it's not so bad.

Like I have a choice.

Today I put together a really cheap and simple combination Whisker Pole/Tiller Extension for my new TI. Total cost was under $11. I'll be uploading photos and details under a separate new forum topic.
