Thanks Fly4v, To recap, this is a 2008 AI with TI Amas grafted on. Seaworthiness, utility and comfort are the project goals.

The crossbar is a aluminum reinforcing strut/stabilizer bar, intended to distribute additional stresses arising from the TI's longer, more buoyant Amas. To a large degree, the use of the "haka" benches and the rear batwing seat do this already.

The feeling on the water is much tighter and more secure than unbraced Akas (even those with tramps).

My purpose is to share some cool design concepts and report back on how they work out. I hope this will spark others to use their imagination. There's plenty of it here on the forum. Many of us are not content to sit in the cockpit and sail missionary style for the rest of our lives. A lot is still possible with these boats.

Everything I share is with the designers blessing, and it's not going to be a how-to thread. For parts info and other mod details, you'll have to contact the builder over at the HKSC site.

These mods are not for everyone, but we all were wondering, what would happen if and AI and a TI "did it"? Someone had to be crazy enough to try it. :D

I will say that everything I've seen done so far is within the scope of most hobbyists. Where welding or precise pipe bending is needed, you can take the parts to a local muffler shop and ask them to do it for you.

We are facing 25 mph winds this weekend. If everything pans out, we will have sea trial reports, photos and videos for you soon. We'll put her on the scales too and see how much she weighs.

Looks hot and the wave deflector, Does it sails a lot better with the extra ama length? Point higher when beating into the wind? Thanks for sharing. Have you seen any strongly mounted tiller extensions? Looks like the new rudder may offer the option to get out of the main hull easier. Something to looking forward to when i trade up to an AI.

Howzit Kiwi,

So far I have notice a little more speed and a much smoother ride.

We are testing the Batboat in 20-35 knot winds all this weekend and I am scheduled for a test drive today. Outside it is howling!

I sailed a TI yesterday and an AI today so will have a good feel for the qualities for each that might be seen in the Hybrid.

Should I make it back to shore, I'll fill you all in this week. Some photos and videos will be posted after that.

Aloha!

I am back! With a great big Hybrid AI/TI smile on my face!

Was a fantastic weekend to camp and sail. Winds rarely got below 20mph. And the boat loved it. After a series of tests on the water I can tell you the weakest part of the boat is the bat rudderpin.

We collected some good stills and video to analyze her performance and will be sorting those out this week.

I'll post a report after I wash all the salt and sand off.

Awesome Nohuhu, sounds like you should be testing the new rudder design.

Nohuhu,

Batboat is looking good. Always wished the tramps could be made norrower to allow the use of a paddle but yet provide enough space for storage - which you easily accomplished with a park bench inspired version of a trampoline. Surprised you didn't design in the same gaps in your bat-wing...

Over-the-top indeed. But it really tests out many of our design wishes and looking forward to more bat runs.

Excellent idea.

If we can't break them, we'll send them down to the Aussies for a real beating.

Great work Nohuhu.....err if you arent batman does that make you Robin?
Did you mention a tiller extension? If so do you have any more details? this is an important consideration for me or anyone else who is seriously using tramps.
Thanks for sharing,
JJ.

I feel more like Alfred, offering wizened advice while cleaning up the messes...

There is a simple fiberglass tiller extension. I should have a pict of it somewhere. But it is not to my liking in most positions, so I used my foot at times.

The kaped krusader just kruzed by with more photos and videos. Give me a couple days to post.

At the risk of being repetitive, I've been using this setup for nearly two years now and it does the job.

That's as good a solution as I have seen. I use a similar rig on my AI.

Went great Kiwi! We had lots of wind. :D We broke some stuff. :D :D We loved the results and collected videos and stills. Too much maybe.

Only life's dramas, deadlines and taxes kept me from regurgitating it to everyone this week. After this weekend, I think. Apologies for the wait.

Till then, here's our buddy Vertical's slideshow of the clubs fullmoon weekend camp (w/some shots of me drag-racing the batboat).

And a quick video of the Hybrid AI/TI on shore. Cheers!
