Has anyone made their own tramps out of a mesh or net material?

I'm hoping it's doable without heavy modifications to the yak.
Anybody see any pros/cons?

Also my TI suffers from the non-square aka angle. Is the solution just to contact my dealer for a proper replacement brace? I see a lot of talk about wave deflectors and spray shields. Do people think raked back akas contribute significantly to the nose dives?

Thanks.

I've made 1/2 width fishing Tramps out of shadecloth and 1" strapping. Very strong, using carbon fiber wind surfer masts as the long bars and PVC pipe as the spreaders. I plan on making full width Tramps for my TI, but it's not a top-of-the-list project, so may be a while.

I wouldn't use too open a material like netting, or it won't stop any water splashing up, but I also want material that breaths (lets the air through fast) so as not to act as another sail when coming off a wave.

The first few week the Hobie tramps were available, a few people flipped their AI's using them. I have a set, but only use them in calm conditions. I've cut one side in half already to make 1/2 tramps which I think are much safer in rougher conditions.Image

My Sprayskirt is to keep most of the waves from getting into the cockpit and keeping much dryer. It helps a little on the nose diving, but that's just a bonus.

I had some made to my design which included the front spray skirt, but again like Bob says the material is similar to Hobie's and I have been blown over in strong winds and sloppy seas. Having said that I have them on my new AI now and will use them when I can, or at least the spray skirt which I can employ without the tramps being open. Here is a pic of my set-up...Pirate

I was thinking about it but was given tramps for Xmas so not a huge point now. For me the tramps were not intended to stop splash but just for something to camp out on, the big advantage of open net is you don't need to worry about capsizing like you do with the hobie tramps.
