Can't seem to find much info on tethering gear to the AI or TI. I've just knocked up 6 tethers so I thought I'd post a couple of shots to show what I've done. At under $5 each, they could quite easily pay for themselves in tethering cameras, drive, paddle, cart etc.

How much is a Mirage drive worth ???

The green line is 2mm whipper snipper / strimmer / edge trimmer line. It's nice and strong and has the right stiffness so that it doesn't tangle.

The swages are nickel coated copper about 30 cents each. The snap clips are stainless and about $3.

Do you do similar or is there a better idea out there ?

Looks good. I've also seen somewhere people heating the whipper snipper cord in hot water and winding it around a broom handle to make a curly cord. Might be more to the process - need to look it up again.

Thanks for pointing that out Pete. Now if the teather fails and my drive flutters its way down to the bottom in 666m of water, I'll know who to blame :twisted: :lol:

Funny you should say that Cows. I tried that but it didn't really work. Dunked it in boiling water wrapped around the thread on a large bolt. But it sort of formed big uncontrollable loops. Dunno. Probably because it already has a natural memory diameter of 90mm (as seen in the 2nd photo) from being on the spool which seems to keep it all neat anyway.

Those tethers look great Slaughter. 8)
I'd never thought of using whipper snipper line but it looks ideal. I tether my drive with cord but it can get caught up in the drive. The WS line stands up, avoiding that.

Thanks mate. I also found that by using the copper swages, they are soft enough to compress with a pair of vice grips rather than bashing with a hammer. Then by adjusting the vice grips at a set gap, all swages are compressed identically.

cheers, I like that. Will be doing similar.

I'm still new to this boat, and learning tricks still to aid setting up and using the AI. I secure my dagger board on the way out by looping the paddle keeper bungee through the bungee on the dagger board and clipping it down. I'm sure there is a more bomb proof way looking at your idea, but at least its somewhere to secure it whilst paddling out to deeper water.

Here's an option to try...

Polypropylene coilded around 3/4" copper tubing, steam for 15-20min.

After steaming for 15 - 20 min, goes into the freezer to lock in the molecules. About another 20 min

I recently used this teather to secure my rods and gaffs. Only been using it for 1 run so more testing is needed. I think coils will eventually lose some strech over time. Credit goes to LTD from the Aquahunters website for comming up with the steaming-freezing method. He used thick leader material for his teathers.

Hmmm. Good think'n there Cliff. I just used boiling water then cold water but the duration and shock change in temp may not have been extreme enough. Thanks for that. May have to revisit the process.

It worked, thanks Cliff. I finally wrapped them around a small length of pipe and inserted it in boiling water for 5 minutes. Then pulled it out and immediately immersed it in crushed ice for another 5. And this is the result....

Don't know how long they will stay this shape. Time will tell I spose.

P.S. A side issue. Notice the white plastic hook on the daggerboard bungie. I don't know if you blokes do the same but I find that rather than threading the bungie through the black plastic islet plug, by using this hook instead, it makes the assembly and disassembly a lot quicker. Works so well I don't know why the the dagger doesn't come standard with this type of hook ?

Slaughter - your tethers look great and your dagger board hook is an excellent fix - until Hobie come up with a built in one like on the TI. :D :wink: :wink: May not be possible though :roll:

I used a common method for braiding 3-4 stand rope into spliced loop which we used for squid lines back in the days. Seems to hold up better over time and no knots to hang up on things. Made a bunch of them for my TI and found that the coils like to curl up into each other. So I only run coils on a couple tethers and straight runs for the others.

I'm checking the web for animated instructions on how to braid. Good skill to learn since I found them much better than using knots for fishing/marine rigging.

You don't really need the tent spike (fich???) if you tape the ends tightly into a point.
