I really like the solutions with spine boards. They are durable, floats and have lots of places to attach different gear.
In Sweden they are a bit pricy but my biggest concern is there weight.
I have made different prototypes and for now I have one HAKA that goes under 6,5 lb (2,8 kg).
If it works good during the 2014-long-trip I will make nr 2 the same.
I will make a short movie and post a link.

Ok, now I have tested the prototype and it works well. Not built to stand on and dimensioned for my weight.
Just sitting on the haka and strap gear on it. Very light weight 2,8 kg. Still possible to fold in AMA. Also possible to release and move it further out from main hull. I do that and flip it outwards when I want to use ordinary paddle.
In the video you can see some gear straped to th topside.

Weight on these small sail boats is EVERYTHING, especially if you like to camp off your AI. Nice lightweight design, KP. In my own case, building wood hakas, I was able to get the weight down to about 11# (5 kg) each: http://www.hobiecat.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=70&t=7276&start=240 My goal was to get them down to 10# (4.5 kg). I think I could have done that, but then it dawned on me--it would be a lot easier to cut a pound or 2 some place else, rather than the haka. Hey, I might even try to lose a couple pounds body weight--now, isn't that brilliant!

In any case, KP, nice job.

Keith

5 kg is very good for that kind of solution.
Can you fold the AMAs? That was one of the "must have" for me.

No, only slightly, but that is not important for me, i.e., folding an aka with haka. I almost never feel the need to fold my akas in--I can stand/sit on the haka if I am fighting a large fish (that also rarely happens.) I can, with the design I use (CaptnChaos--Jim Quinlan's design) quickly remove the haka, if it doesn't have a lot of gear on it.

Has anyone found a spine board that is an exact color match to Hobie Hibiscus Red ?

I'm wondering if the color Hobie uses has some plastic industry standard name that would be familiar to a spine board manufacturer. It would make it possible to order the exact color. I found at least one spine board supplier that says they can provide "custom colors", ( hopefully not a minimum order of 1,000 ).

I saw one post where someone complained that their spine board was slippery. Have others had this problem ?
I have strapped many patients to this type of spine board and all of the ones I have used had a textured surface like you find on the gunwales of the TI/AI. I never did it in the water though, so maybe the texture isn't enough grip for a Haka.
I really like the spine boards with pins in the handholds. What a great place for a carabiner or bungee hook to grab.

Cheers

Chris

Nothing wrong with this solution, 'cept the color choices..

Attaching rubber pads to the bottoms or foam sleeves to the Akas will help them keep their grip. Once your weight is on them, you don't have to lash the boards on too tightly.

Folding options:
- There's always aussieonyak's awesome mod: This takes some skill to do right though.

- You could always use just ONE Haka or set up just ONE side to fold, for convenience while fishing.

- Hakas with bungees will still fold under pressure. If you leave the INSIDE bungees looser, you can just unhook the outside pair and fold quite a bit, particularly if you slide them in toward you first. Make sense?

Hey Keith - Good luck shedding those last few unwanted lbs.

Looks good Thomas and very light. 8)
Any details on the materials? It looks like 50mm tube but what are the corners from?
Also what is that gear that is strapped to them...something to do with camping?

I really like that one Thomas. Impressive design, up there with the best of them. Those 90 degree joints look familiar but I don't know where I've seen them before :?: :?:

I was googling for fiberglass pipes and found this site.

http://www.blickpunkt.se/exl_sortiment_kopplingar.asp

They are selling hardware for events, you can translate and see what they got.
The fiberglass pipes are 30 mm diameter. (Carbon fiber is better but way much more expensive.)
They have a shop nearby and I could visit them to actually see their products IRL.
I am quite sure you can find similar products wordwide.

@stringy
The gear strapped on is one rudder stick and the center board. Also something soft (homemade from ArmaFlex pipe isolation) for my back.

Thanks for that info Thomas. I found the equivalent available downunder. It looks like a very useful product.
'System 30' is available here: http://www.exelcomposites.com.au/Produc ... rames.aspx

Looks like your company downunder got a wider range of products.
Sweden company don't have more than one type of pipes.
They don't have carbon fiber pipes at all.
From other companies in Sweden that do have carbon fiber pipes, I can see totally different prices!
And you are right, system 30 is a very useful product.
