Clearly, your priorities are in the right place.

Funny how our spouses sometimes disagree.

Go figure!

I picked up some bamboo planks from the local hardware awhile ago. They are 1920mm x 65mm x 15mm.
Not sure how they get them as planks, maybe they process the bamboo and turn them into planks. They were sold as "bamboo screening" for the garden.
I can take pics if required.

A pic would be great CGM.
Do you think the bamboo would support your weight when spanned over the aka? Was it from Bunnings?

Love this mod! I certainly will be looking at adding my own. Just another thought. Would it be feasable to making a hinge in the middle (along length), or attachment/extention (between ha a bench and hull)? This would allow for more "deck space", if needed.

As far as adding Hakas go, if they are built with flat cushioned bottoms (no PVC) you can slide them in and out on the Akas anywhere you like. You can add 2 or more benches to one side and create a real barge platform for entertaining or camping.

If you want them close to the hull, you would need to build the benches to allow for the raised Aka knuckles on the new boats. Those things get in the way. Or maybe just put half-tramps close to the hull, with your hakas out near the Amas.

Bear in mind that the Haka allows you to paddle. A tramp will not.

Hope this answers your question.

While we wait for picts of the bamboo benches, here's some of Kahikolu's latest "Haka3" bench, built for the TI3 project.

Image

In order to raise the carrying capacity of each bench, they feature a cantilevered support truss in the middle of the bench. It helps strengthen the weak middle section and spread the load across all the members. ( I hope this explanation passes muster with our engineer friends).

Image

The Haka3 fits ANY AI/TI, and has been load tested at over 350lbs. I just had a great ride on them.

The new bench looks excellent.

Need the beam to compensate for the extra knots.

See that you have skipped the original PVC and gone with lengths of rubber pad.
For those that continue with the less variable lack of positioning 2" PVC route, MD Door & window weather strip (3/8" x 1 1/4" x 10') at Lowes make great self-adhesive pads for the inside of the pipes.

We designed these to be universal, to be used on the AI/TI/TI3.

One advantage of the fixed PVC route, especially if you lock them in with pipe clamps, is that the bench adds the maximum strength and stability to the Akas.

Also, benches will not cause the Akas to "pull" together, as with the tramps.

Can't wait to see picts and reports from other members who try these out.

Warning: Shore based photography follows.

Best thing about the benches compare to the tramps is the ability to tie stuff to the deck.

That leads to this.

Yes, would look better from the other side but there is a house there.

And finally.....a bad picture

Image

It is a fast handful. Need to do the lines differently but it works.

Wow, I can't believe you dug that thing up. Funny when doing an image search on Google for "dune hobie" that is the #7 picture. Should have done a better job.

If I get this to work in a safe/consistent manner I will make a how to thread. Yakaholic started it all and I thought S.Yoars had solved the formula but then he had his lines tangle. Fusioneng's work is a proven way to go.

It was done with a harken pulley on a swivel base that was zip tied and then dummy corded to the top of the mast. I just have other stuff that I want to put on top of the mast.

Modification always involves the very thing I don't like: Compromise.

Google is a strange and wonderful place. For instance, THIS was #25.

For those keeping score at home, the plastic pipe we use is 1 1/2" with black rubber non stick shelf liner from Lowes.

Same padding you see glued to the universal "Haka3" pictured above.

(accept no substitutes) ;-)
