Thanks Kayaking Bob ! you know you were the first person I saw on a hobie Island tackle some serious sailing on your Alenuihaha Channel crossing video. That was the first time I realized that these craft are far more seaworthy than they may first appear and that opened up the possibility for me to learn to sail it and then do some kind of expedition, which I plan to do once proficient with my AI.

After seeing that video Bob I went and purchased my AI - so you're the reason I'm on here now ! :wink:

I edited that video but the captain was actually my Hobie dealer Kelly of P&P kayaks. He is quite the waterman and makes my adventures pale by comparison! :) Amazing what our AI's and TI's can do in the right hands.

NOHUHU brought up the issue of breaching the rod holders with PVC pipe if there is the downward pressure of sitting. That got my attention since I sail offshore a lot. So before my first sail, I cut the PVC that goes down into the rod holders shorter so that it would not rest on the bottom of the holders. Then I placed a padded PVC pip across the gunwale to assure those PVC pipes never see the bottom of the rod holder hole. NOHUHU may have saved me the cost of a new hull as I never gave the risk any real thought.

Ah, I get it. So the pipes in the rod holders are to prevent it from sliding around?

Exactly. I wanted something that was drop and go. It stays put once its in. Very solid and reinforced with a galvanized steel rod within two layers of PVC pipe (overkill really). Final weigh was 18# but half the weight was the steel rod. If I did it again, I would just use an aluminum rod. It feels light, but solid.

Hey Holgi - saw this post back a few pages and thought I would let you know - after watching you and Josh working the folding Amas when catching large fish I wanted to make sure I had that capability built into a haka when I made one. I just made and tested my first one and it works very well - thought you might be interested for landing those biggies.

Lol b!tch$ on top bottles on the bottom.....much needed to lighten it an endless easy mounting possibilities....18lbs with epoxy an ss screws....one of the 2x4 supports will hold 200lbs+ soo maybe alittle overkill but hey itlll do

I had the time to finish these up. I have a great idea twist of a previous idea to fix them to the akas. For now, it is late and I'm tired and want to sail tomorrow. I did snap a few pics of the finished product. I'm happy with them, considering I had a circ saw, jigsaw, cordless drill, router and a sander only.

The pics are crappy but will post more tomorrow when fitting before stain/varnish.

They currently weigh 17lbs each, but these were expedition style hakas. I expect they will be close to 20lb onced varnished. I have the epifanes ready. They are a mighty 8' x 16". They are also heavily cantilevered with 32" aft the rear aka. Stress test held my weight 165lb/75kg at the far rear end of the haka with only 1" of flex.
