i recently went on a trip to kelley's island in lake erie looking forward to some great paddling, pedaling, and sailing. two out of three were great. when i went to set up the sail i looked into the mast base socket to find to my surprise that the pin and plate were no longer there. has anyone else experienced this?

This is a known issue. See end post here
viewtopic.php?f=68&t=5958&p=68667&hilit=Maintenance+note!!
I take it you transport your hull upside down. Some pool noodle jammed in the mast receiver will stop you losing parts. It also prevents another problem - lost mast collar balls.
