Check out some trips that I've done with the boat.

Intro and the Boat
Hi everyone, I wanted to introduce myself and thank everyone for the great ideas and shared knowledge on these forums. I have come from growing up around power boats when I was a kid, to kayaking the local lakes and rivers, and now have gotten into sailing thanks to the Hobie Island. I've owned my 2014 TI for a little over a year and have been lurking/learning on here ever since. I'm in the San Antonio, TX area and try to get out to Canyon Lake every week or so.

I thought I'd share my take on some of the mods that I learned about on this site.

First up is my set of haka benches with pivoting mounts that allow the akas to fold without removal.

Here they are in the folded position:
Image

And here is the port side with the akas extended:
Image

Here's a shot of a mount, which is basically a two hole pipe clamp bolted to an aluminum plate:
Image

Image
The top plate (the plate on the left) acts as a big washer and gives the haka a smooth surface to rotate on. It gets sandwiched between the bottom plate and the haka bench

Image

A 5/16" stainless steel bolt is then ran through the bench and through the mount and secured with a nylon nut.

My goal was to minimize time at the boat ramp rigging and un-rigging the boat, which also brings me to my next mod, bungee-less ama retention. This idea came from another member on the forum - http://www.hobiecat.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=71&t=46952

Image

I basically did the same thing mentioned in the previous link. I made the retention devices out of HDPE cutting board that I picked up at the grocery store. I was going to use stainless wing nuts to hold them on, but decided to try making my own out of the same cutting board. I cut out the "wing nuts", drilled and tapped a 1/4" hole and screwed them down onto a 1/4" bolt that protrudes from the ama bungee fitting.

Here a shot of my hiking stick, which is an adjustable broom handle with a 1/4" stainless steel eye-bolt bolted to the end and threaded into the steering handle.

Lastly, for now, are my homemade spray skirts, which are also rigged to allow the folding of the akas without removal.

The boat is almost as fun modding as it is sailing. I plan to do a few more things before I'm done with her.

Edit: images fixed... kind of a pain hosting images with dropbox.

Nice mods. I especially like the haka mounts.

Welcome Chadbach. Love the mods. Live in Houston and try to make it to Canyon Lake once a year. It's by far my favorite lake to sail. Some days that water is so teal colored it's like being in the Caribbean. San Antonio is a get place to have an island because you are central to all the best sailing spot in Texas. Maybe I'll see you on the lake sometime.) Let me know if you ever want to set up a Hobie group sail on the lake or offshore in the Gulf.

For those that have never been on chadbach's Canyon Lake here is a video I shot in 2013. Great place to sail. Check out that water. Nicest lake I've been on.

Thanks for the compliments, everyone, couldn't have done it without this forum.

Vetgam - nice video, thanks for posting. I definitely know what you mean about the teal water! I would definitely be up for a group sail on Canyon AND the gulf. Plus, I'd like to check out that jib! I saw your video in your other thread... would like to try one some day. A sail/camping weekend could be cool. I'm actually thinking about doing the upcoming Texas 200, and could use some practice on the gulf!

Let's do it. The Texas 200 is on my list too. Did they have it in 2015? If so I must have missed it. If you do it, I will join you for sure. Keep in touch.

Let's do it, I'm definitely in for the 200 if you are. It would be cool to get an island group together. The 2015 200 was back in June and according to their website, 2016's starts June 13th.

Ok Texpatriate your in. I still get out and sail in the winter if the temperature is above 65. In the winter I stick to the calmer waters of the bay though. You game for that too? If so, I'll start posting up on the site or send you personal messages when going out.

Let me know when your out on Lake Houston too. It's not a bad place to sail either.

Ttexpatriate, sounds good about the 200! I figure I'll start a "Texas 200" thread at the beginning of the year when they decide on the route for 2016. The more islands, the merrier! It'd be cool to get a support group together.

Otherwise, if you guys get a Houston area trip planned, let me know. It'd be a bit of a drive for me, but with enough notice, I could probably make it work.

Palacios sounds good, that would be an easy enough trip for me. I don't have cold weather gear, but like Vetgam, I'm good down to about 65 degrees. I'd be down for a weekend run, mid to late January, after the holidays.
