Managed to break an aka shear pin today - couple miles from home. Had a replacement on hand, but thought I would try one of the round (bamboo?) chopsticks I had with me. Had not thought ahead to wrap them in electrical tape or something, so it tended to fall right through... remedied that with a bungee/clove hitch: https://picasaweb.google.com/1081497986 ... 0994637810 Sailed with it for about 2.5 hours in 9-12 mph winds - no problems at all. Hauled it up on the beach, yanked hard on the rear aka, and the chopstick sheared off nicely - no damage to the surrounding pieces. I'll keep carrying real shear bolts But, pending a successful chopstick trial in 15-20 mph winds, I think my on-the-water replacement of choice will be the chopsticks:
I'm thinking rudder pin too (also just to get home on).... but have been too lazy to try it out. |

Out of curiosity, do you know what caused the pin to break? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

Hauling the boat out of the water on to marsh grass/peat that was about a foot higher than the water.... felt some resistance, pulled harder and.... Snap!...My guess is that that ama was hung up on something. So.... totally the intended situation for breaking a shear bolt - instead of something else. |
