Post subject:  Rudder Winglet Update -- Anything new?

I sail my AI in the Gulf off southwest FL and plan to add a rudder winglet to hopefully improve performance, hold the rudder down, and lift the bow a little. Is there anything new I should know about before I start; e.g., material, size, shape, placement, attachment, and any other lessons learned?

Thanks!

Polecat - winglets

Ya click on link provided by Rio Dan. That link also contains a few links to Kayak Fishing Forum (KFS) where there is more discussion and description of benefits of using a winglet.

I think some of my most recent experience is leaning toward making the winglet a little smaller. The amount of downward pull by the winglet on an earlier 4 bolt rudder proved to be too much for some 4 bolt rudders at high speed and rough conditions. Kayaking Bob's experience bears out that obervation as well.

I have found about a 10% increase in sailing speed with winglet. The winglet decreases cavitation which decreases drag. It does help keep the rudder down and adds a more responsive feel to the rudder.
