WaterTribe Ultimate Florida 2018 Update 21

5:40 PM

Hiawashe & Bacon are both hunkered down trying (hoping) to avoid tornadoes, gale winds, and torrential rains. Unless things change tonight, this is my last update until tomorrow.

Bacon has been on the move tonight. He is currently at a west-facing boat ramp, about 0.6 mile SSW of the Ft Clinch Historic Site.

WaterTribe Ultimate Florida 2018 Update 23

2:55 PM

Bacon has not moved since last night, probably due to inclement weather.

Hiawashe has moved up the coast and is 3/4 mile north of Ormond Beach on the Halifax River.

Islands have finished CampfireCowboy and Blackbeard (AIs) and LuckyMe/BoatBum (TI) have finished on Key Largo with identical times: 4 days 4 hrs 12 min. Congratulations!!!

Update on Jim Czarnowski, chief Hobie engineer Jim did not do Nightmare this year. He is approaching NW Cape. Good for him!

I'm happy to report that Admiralsnackbar has gotten out of his shallow water predicament and has reached the Gulf of Mexico. Windtern, who was near him, is making good progress to extricate himself from the same mess.

These were great updates! I didn't see this thread until after the EC this year, but that Wednesday, neither Windtern nor I had any trouble in the shallows that day. There was a storm front moving through as we were leaving CP2 and decided to anchor up on the lee side of an island and take down our masts to ride out the lightning before heading out into the Gulf. After the storm passed over us we got moving a bit after noon.

Overall, I had a great EC run this year, and glad to see people were tracking here on the hobie forums :D

WaterTribe Ultimate Florida 2018 Update 26

Bacon has not moved today and remains SSW of Ft. Clinch. Apparently severe weather is causing Bacon to not venture out on the water. Chief says Bacon is chomping at the bite and will move out tomorrow morning.

Hiawashe is in St Augustine shut down for the night on the Edgewater Inn beach.

Bacon has moved out swiftly this morning and is on the St Marys River, which is the border of Florida/Georgia in this area..

Hiawashe is a bit north of St Augustine and moving nicely.

Bacon has shut down at a fishing camp on the St Marys River, SSE of Folkston, GA. Big day for Bacon.

Hiawashe has also had an excellent day and is still moving! Wow! She has crossed the St John's River and is heading north on Clapboard Creek. She is south of Timucuan Ecological and Historical Site.

WaterTribe Ultimate Florida 2018 Update 29

Bacon is SSW of Folkston, GA, on a section of the St Marys River with lots of twists and switchbacks, 7 mi SSW of Folkston, GA. A meandering river and slow going I think.

Hiawashe is moving about 3 mi south of Amelia City, FL. She is 11 mi south of Ft Clinch. A determined lady!

Bacon has stopped for the night in Georgia immediately east of St George on St Marys River.

Hiawashe is pulled over in Georgia near St Marys, the village. A nice day.

WaterTribe Ultimate Florida 2018 Update 31

10:26 AM

Bacon seems to be on the 40-mile portage between St George and Moniac, GA. Not sure what the rules are for this, but a few years ago they were changed because Chief and participants were worried about getting hit by cars/trucks as they portaged along this road.

Hiawashe is still in Georgia near St Marys, the village. She has not moved yet.

WaterTribe Ultimate Florida 2018 Update 32

10:06 PM

Bacon is in Fargo, GA, about 0.3 mile from the Suwanee River. He will take the Suwanee to it's confluence with the Gulf of Mexico about 25 miles north of Cedar Key, FL. A report on the WaterTribe forum says Bacon used a folding bike on his 40-mile portage. I assume that means he was towing his Kruger and all belongings/supplies.

Hiawashe has pulled off the St Marys River in a non-descript area about half way between Kingsland, GA, and Folkston, GA. Great day for her.

Both Bacon and Hiawashe are making great time and progress. Very impressive.

WaterTribe Ultimate Florida 2018 Update 33

10:42 AM

Bacon is on the beautiful Suwanee River immediately south of Fargo, GA. Not a big current, but lots of beautiful little sandy beaches to pull out on whenever he wants.

Hiawashe has not moved yet today. Update as of 12:49 PM Hiawashe is on the move on St Marys River.

WaterTribe Ultimate Florida 2018 Update 34

10:08 PM

Bacon is on the Suwanee River roughly 18 miles ESE of Jasper, FL. I have no idea if he has had any wind and, if he does, is it with him or against him. He is laid up for the night.

Hiawashe has pulled out at Trader's Hill Boat Ramp in Georgia. This is one of the Ultimate Florida checkpoints. Tomorrow she will get to St George and begin the 40-mile portage. She is doing great.

This is a note left on the WaterTribe forum by PaddleDancer:
Quote:
Chief and MrsChief are waiting for Hiawashe at the St. Mary’s Fish Camp. Hiawashe is moving toward them at a good pace after a night of camping in the rain.

Bacon was sore and tired this morning when he dropped into the Suwannee at Fargo, GA. He was looking forward to an easier day after completing the 40 mile portage yesterday in less than 10 hours.
