Second Overnighter Test
Managed to get away recently for another overnighter spent entirely on board (apart from leaving to get a few pictures).
All up I spent 20 hours on the AI.
I was keen to test the bimini and a new Teton Outfitter tent to replace my cramped bivvy. The Teton is an instant up tent, just peg the corners and pull a draw string to set up. The included waterproof fly can be clipped on if needed but as I would be under the bimini and the weather was fine, I didn't bother. The Teton is designed to fit over their cot so I figured it would be an ideal size for the haka camping platform.
Under sail the collapsed bimini was out of the way. It was a bit like a quarter deck/rack for luggage:

I anchored in my usual spot, had the bimini up in a few minutes and cooked dinner:

It was dark when I set the tent up so no pics but it was so simple to do. The most difficult bit was slipping the corner loops over the eyebolts I had fitted to PVC pipes at the ends of the ladder haka. The tent itself was up in less than a minute!
Next morning I cooked breakfast:

I was visited by a couple of kayakers out for a paddle. They were keen to see how I'd spent the night:

I'm very pleased with this combination. There were some strong winds during the night and the bimini remained flap free, though I did have to get up and put a twist in the bimini straps to stop an annoying wind hum. The tent remained very stable and with so much more room than my old bivvy it felt like I was in a luxury mansion! Set up was incredibly easy.
I'm ready for a much longer test next ...with even a bit of wet weather it shouldn't be a problem!

Stringy, that's quite an AI-RV you've assembled there! Wow!

Very very impressive Stringy.

Wind is probably the biggest enemy of my setup and I'm sure yours would handle the wind a lot better as the sideways surface area looks way smaller.

How did you fill in your 20 hours ? ( on 2nd thoughts, I don't want to know )

Well I'll tell you anyway...sailing, anchoring, setting up, coffee, cooking, repositioning haka, setting up for sleeping, ringing you know who to brag about where I was (returning the favour), sleeping,... waking, watching fish and stingrays glide over the sand, coffee, cooking breakfast, setting up GoPro to video Teton, setting up Teton, getting interrupted by curious kayakers, thinking of ways to improve setup, testing anchor types, packing up, sailing home.
Actually the time went really quick! :D
I had some movies on a tablet I had with me in case I got bored but I didn't turn it on until the morning and that was only to check the weather.

Nice setup!

Just one question (and forgive me if this has been covered somewhere in the previous 21 pages of this thread), but why have the bimini if you have a flysheet for the tent?

Cheers,

Mike.

Thanks Mike.
The bimini offers better protection from the elements and gives a much larger area under cover.
A few years back we added a Coleman Event 14 domed shelter to our camping equipment. It is one of the best camping purchases we have made. We can now set up and camp in any weather.
The bimini was the closest I could get to a dome on the AI. It's easy to put up and can withstand strong winds. Once up it allows you to cook or set up the tent etc under cover. It made a huge difference this trip giving protection from the sun and I'm hoping it will be just as effective in rain. Sure it adds to the complexity and weight (8.81kgs including mounts) but I reckon it's worth it for it's advantages, especially on a multi day camping trip.

What, multi day as in Bass Strait ? It would certainly come in handy if the 60km distance from island to island wasn't reached.

Those photos are fantastic.

Jaw-dropping pimp-job on the boat.

And a great camping trip too.

But we want more details. About the meals!

Just one question Stringy, has the missus forgiven you yet and allowed you back into the house?

Stringy - I suspect you previously gave us dimensions on that canopy but can you provide it again? I have one for my flats boat that I have never used and will never use. I might be able to convert it.

Railblaza makes a great Bimini attachment for their starports, if anyone can make use of this.

Sorry for the late replies but I've had no internet/phone for the last few days.

The bimini is 2.4m long (to fully cover the tent) and 1.7 -1.9m wide. I would have prefered a wider bimini but couldn't source one that was 2.4m long.

She was happy to see me go! Actually we had planned to get away this week but she twisted her knee and was keen to rest it. We'll hopefully get away next week in the TI. Pedaling is good therapy.

Thanks Nohuhu. I'm not the 'foodie'. I'll leave that to Slaughter. I usually take frozen left overs for reheating.
Turns out all right though:
