It won the battle... but it won't win the war. In the clip below, fellow yak fisher hooked up to a marlin - and defeated it! Thanks mate. I'm sure it's the same bloke used to work with and I've lost touch. I'll look him up in the phone book. I haven't done any outside fishing in the AI yet but now that I have a few more sea hours under my belt, and a few of your YouTube clips to spur me on, I'm looking forward to venturing out. My fishing gear is only set up for the lake so what line weight do you run with for sea trolling ? |

I have 2 rods I typically use in the ocean and troll with both. Mostly troll with the larger one though. It has 40lb mono and the other has 30lb. Sometimes I use trace, thicker mono or fluoro, or other times wire |

It depends on the catch and yak configuration. For sharks and other scary looking fish, I'll often deal with them at the side of the yak, as opposed to in it. So I either make sure it has no life force left, or I've otherwise got it under control before bringing it in... all the while hoping a bigger shark doesn't come and grab it while I'm doing it. Thanks Josh - amazing stuff! I was interested to hear that you have your shark shield on - most of the time. I've always thought that if I hooked up with something really big and scary, I would feel that I was the catch and it was the catcher

MM, I've never really feared anything I've hooked (save for an extremely angry seal) but for sure, have had a few scary moments from investigative creatures from the deep. Namely the GWS that came sniffing last year, the humpback that kissed my bow, but truth be known it's not really the beasts that give me a heightened pulse, but more so other more common risks - such as being hit by a boat, or being blown out to sea. Have had close calls on all fronts. Fortunately though nothing has ever happened to deter me from the sport I love and I doubt anything will. |
