Getting back to the issue of tacking an AI. When I sail my AI I carry my Mirage drive but almost always have the plug in and the Mirage drive stored in the cockpit. I have found that as long as you don't have to reef the sail due to excessively high winds the AI will tack as long as you back wind the sail with your hand as you come about. This does not seem to work as well when you have the sail reefed. If you have your Mirage drive in it probably won't work either because of the extra drag caused by it. That being said, if I have to short tack up a narrow channel I put the drive in and pedal through the tacks with the AI. With the TI it's a different story, I never have the Mirage drive in when the sail is up. Jerry |
