We manage to trash a rudder in the making of this video, but also discover a new way to sail a TI that makes it go really really fast

Great stuff! Pure entertainment! 8)
Let me guess. Your ideas for the mod and the crew sailing technique were all born in the Kings Arms!
At least we know Hobie have solved the rudder pin issue!

PS:
'Trampoline'- The space on a catamaran or trimaran, usually made of some kind of mesh, located between the hulls. It's a place for the crew (like a cockpit on dinghies and cruisers).

PPS: G-Clamp!! Now where have I heard that before. So there really is nothing new under the sun.

Yes, all our best work is done in the Kings Arms, but going out & doing a Silver Surfer on the Ama was all Simon's idea.

Guys, yet another outstanding vid! Tim, you've certainly raised the bar on video editing. Loved it :D

BTW, there have been a number of cases reported where the rudder snapped at the same point. It appears to be at the spot where the plastic is injected into the mould. For example see TI rudder snapped in half!?!. I'm sure Hobie engineers are looking at this.

You guys are going to love the tramps when you get them!

It looks like you would benefit from the double bungee mod for retaining the ama.
I also noticed your aka are raked aft.

I had not realised that all the other rudders were failing at the same point, obviously the TI rudder is a lot bigger than the AI, & it is nicely balanced so the forces on it are not so apparent.

I guess the rudder is just not man enough for the job, there are huge forces on it, so it is not entirely surprising they are failing, fortunately it is an easy part to replace.

I would have thought that glass fibre would have been a better material to use, or perhaps titanium  !

timsnape,

I told my wife a little about the video and mentioned that the guys on the video have an English accent. Then I told her whatn you were doing and she said they must be Australian.

You guys are getting one hell of a reputation down under.

Great video. Loved it.

FINALLY!!! A video of how I sail my AI!! Only I use trampolines, and when the tiller is on the opposite side, I have to steer with my toes, but when you're on the same side as the tiller, you can climb right out to the edge, level the boat out, and MOVE!

Now THAT's how to sail!

(I know, it's not for everyone, but you've got to try it at least once!)

Thanks for the video!

So what are you say'n. Do we drill holes in our rudder or not !!!

It's great seeing others willing to wreck their own gear in the name of science.

Great stuff fellas. Loved it.

That was awesome blokes!

Not sure whats most impressive- The silver surfer move
- Having the sail totally unfurled while doing the silver surfer move
OR- being able to pull an ear to ear smile with the freezing English ocean smashing you in the face

Very well done & very entertaining

Hi guys,

Brilliant vid. Just showed this to my wife to convince her it's not, as she calls it, a pedalo (pedalo playstation she calls it because she cannot remember the name lol). I ordered my Ti earler today from the Hobie Centre at poole.

The thing about the Hobie Islands is that because of their exceptional stability, you can take them out in really ferocious weather, & then once you finish sailing, you can then navigate in places a sail boat would never go.

So basically you can do a lot more with them than you can with any other kind of sailboat.

The area we sail is Portland Harbour where the 2012 Sailing Olympics are being held, just down the coast from you. Most weekends the only people on the water are the Olympic sailing crews in training with all their support and safety boats & us, in our Hobies. We have no safety boat and we often sail in conditions that even the Olympic grade sailors will not go out in.

Do let us know when you get your TI. Ee have been planning a trip to Poole for sometime.

timsnape,

Just to let you know my 12yo daughter has watched the vid and loves it; nothing like the male species doing the thing they know the best (mucking around and breaking things    ).

As we have not received our tramps yet; she loves getting out and doing the same things as you have done to video (thanks), she is always on the ama aka!
