Some may remember a trip from the Big Island to Hana and back made by Kelly Harrison and myself .

Alenuihaha Crossing

viewtopic.php?f=70&t=10417&hilit=Hana

Kelly's going to attempt a real topper. Big Island to Kauai. He using a TI, but going single. (Matt this is truely some new territory for the Hobie)

Left the northern tip of the Big Island (Keokeo) this morning. Made it to Hana in approx 3.5 hours. Must have been flying, close to 8-9knots. Wind was probably in the 20 + knot range.

But broke two rudder pins. Evidently picked up some kind of a replacement at hardware store on Maui and is off again.

Ironic after getting across the channel. He's now afraid he'll run out of good wind Thursday AM.

Will try to post here, but Garth (store assistant) will be posting at:

http://hawaiisailingkayaks.com/hkscforu ... opic=351.0 and

on Facebook, Hawaii Island Sailors

WIll be quite a feat.

Aloha

Dan

Yes, that will be quite a feat. Please keep us posted.

Regarding broken pins--was that with the new vertical rudder?

 You guys have no idea!! This is the IronMan of ocean crossings. Usually only attempted by >30' sailboats and 6 man outriggers with sail (and chase boat).

Keith - It's a TI so it uses the same rudder pin regardless, I believe. Probably broke it surfing swells.

The channel he's tackling now averages 8-12' seas and is 15-20' on really rough days.

Where's he landing on Oahu? Wish we knew bout it B4.

Well he's done Alenuihaha (now three times) He's done Molokai-Oahu racing OC-6 (not sure of number), plus raised on Hawaiian waters (father was original beach boy), etc

His course to Kauai will be north of the other islands so he doesn't get sandwiched. And he was smart enough to drop the original start day full of small carft warnings.. So if anybody is going to do it he will.

His greatest fear is getting caught with light winds due to the time length involved. Look at the wind predictions for Thursday.

Backing very easterly and dropping. He knows he'll be tired and wants to sail versus peddle.

So it will be non stop unless he runs into more equipment difficulties. But you might give Garth (808) 990-6699) your phone number in case he does decide to stop for any unforeseen problems.

Going around Molokai in the dark in 20 knot winds and 6 foot wind waves worries me. But, as Dan says, If anyone can do it, it's Kelly!

Most likely he'll lay over in Kahului tonight. Try Molokai Thursday. Then Oahu Friday. Etc.

Anyway, that's what I would do. (IF I was Plenty Pupule  )

Nope, he's worried about lighter winds later Thursday, so it full steam ahead!

Kelly is stopping in Maui overnight for repairs and rest.

Just talked to Kelly. He's with Bob.

Aborted trip due to equipment getting chewed up, and time delay interferring with business. Probably try from Maui to Kauai in a couple of weeks.

Bob might post something on problems.

That's Akamai.

For anyone attempting this crossing, Kayak Bob's is the place on Maui to go for spare parts!

On oahu, it's the Batcave.

You've been peeking!! :o

Kelly bent an aka coming off a larger wave but sailed for another couple of hours to get picked up at Kahului boat ramp for the night.

Kelly is fine, and back at work, but stay tuned, in a couple of weeks, for the next leg of the journey.
