This is a great little trek I did last week around a couple islands at a mountain lake in CO (8600 feet el). I do this fairly often in the summer and regardless of the wind also peddle probably 80% of the time (hope I got that spelling correct otherwise I’ll be in big trouble).

I’m sort of curious if others also peddle most of the time even if it’s windy??

I pedal most of the time, especially into headwinds. In a good downwind run, I may not pedal.

Have not been able to break the habit, if I'm just sitting there. Worse case, it promotes healthy blood flow. Best case, they help you point higher, longer.

Above 5-6 MPH under sail, or running downwind, they will just get in the way, though.

Have you tried using the big hooked bungee to lock them back against the hull?

I like to peddle – add’s some exercise to the adventure and I also like the extra speed. I find peddling adds at least a little speed even in some fast downwind sailing. I was wondering this because if I did this trek with another AI who did not peddle if there was any wind ("sailing purist"), our speeds would be way different. The ability to peddle is a big part of why I like this unusual craft so much.

Dang.. pedal is the correct word (before the spelling guy corrects me here)

Same here Walt. I find I've always got my feet in the stirrups. Also, if it's cool, it helps me keep me a bit warmer. Mind you, don't know if it's the continuous peddling action or the height of the paddles in relation to the seat height, but when I am peddling, I tend to piss like a racehorse ( probably a bit too much information. Time to change the subject ). Love your part of the world Walt. Keep those vids and pics coming.

I think I now need a scupper for my dry suit.

There is a Colorado front range (cities along the frong range) Hobie AI/TI club that hopefully is going to visit Elevenmile res this summer. I put together this "guide"

http://analogengineering.com/elevenmile/route.html

Its somewhat related the quetion about pedaling since some folks will want a more rigourous sail/pedal and some will want a more relaxed sail.

FYI, I think the route C "three island trek" in the link would make a nice race course (crazy pedaling allowed). The course - you just need to enclose all three islands and probably do the islands in the same order. It would be wild on a windy day and this place has a lot of windy days.

Tony, my scuppers are too small, so I prefer to shi-shi from the Hakas.

No venturi effect needed!
