Did you ever get anywhere with re-angling and/or re-locating the mainsheet cleat ?

Thanks for your reply. Interesting information. I didn't know the volume of amas are the same between the two boats. Your logic is sound and I'll take it. When above 15 I'll reef a little and compare performance.

Hi PeteCress, Kayaking Bob is right...In gusty conditions sail with the sheet uncleated...remember the sailing dinghy adage, WHEN IN DOUBT, LET IT OUT...Having said that, we Hobie AI/TI adventurers have another advantage, we can reef in our sail area. Either luff up or turn downwind to take the pressure off the sail to make furling easier. You will find you have a lot more controland, if the sea is not short and choppy to the point you are drowning in spray, you will even pick up extra speed without digging an ama in.

FWIW, I have worked out something that works for me. ...... Basically Chekika's approach: relocating the cleat..... But also with 3:1 and 5/16's line.

I have had it out repeatedly in what I would call extreme conditions (gusting into the thirties - MPH-wise).

Tried my best to pitchpole or flip, but no luck except for once when I sheared an ama bolt just from the water pressure at speed.

I also do the no-cleat thing sometimes, using a ball in the Yak Attack rails I mounted.... but mainly I either sail uncleated or with the line half-in-half-out of the cleat so that no matter how much force is on it, just a flick of the wrist uncleats.
