I’d like to have a way to lock the handle on the steering rudder.
On a long trip with an outboard, it would be very easy not to keep steering. Auto-semi-pilot AI...lol
Opinions ?

Simplest way would be to get a 1/4 -20 eyebolt and screw it into the tiller and all the way through so it hits the gunwale. You could add a protective strip of some sort under the tiller if you are worried about gunwale marking.

Or tie a leash to the head and tie or cleat off to some point forward. Instead of a bolt could fit the PA steering knob maybe?

I did the tie off method to something in front. It didn’t work as expected.
Stringy method is interesting. I’ll give it a try in a couple weeks.

Anyone else have any suggestions I am opened to it.

Well the gunwale is not wide enough to do Stringy suggestion.

That’s a shame Tech. I have the older angled tiller and there is plenty of gunwale.

In the straight ahead position is there no gunwale under the tiller? As Tony said you don’t need much. Maybe you could adjust the tiller angle by re-tying the steering lines?
Another option I seem to remember from ages back was to jam some stretched bungee cord between tiller and gunwale. When you release the cord it expands and locks in place.

Why aren't you securing the rudder in the up position and steering with the outboard tiller?

They hold a heading much much better with the rudder down.
