Matt I wonder in which condition "Penguinman" folded the bow. 15 knots? 20?
In my opinion the jib and the spi should be furled with more than 10 knots or at least this is how i should use it.
Islands are very slow whit low winds.
I also understand that Hobie cannot sell the jib since some people should probably use it with stronger winds with big danger

I have no experience with the spinnaker, but I definitely agree with this when using a jib.

On the topic of when to put the foresails away, I snuff the spin at about 10mph and switch to the jib + main. Then as the wind picks up I begin to furl the main but leave the jib out. This makes for a very balanced feel of the boat and increases visability. I sail like this up to about 17mph. At that point I snuff the jib and go with a 1/2 furled main.

Breeze and swell building as I got out of Port Botany local forecast gave max of 14 kms of wind but felt a little more.

From what I heard about Jim folding the hull, it happened when he was sailing quite fast with the jib and then hit a sand bar and while grinding to a stop the force of the wind on the sail THEN folded the hull.
