WaterTribe 2018 Everglades Challenge Update 16

AI 2 Island Jim Czarnowski is still in Flamingo or he simply has not pressed his “OK” button. 10:00 Update Jim has left Flamingo and is headed east.

TI Islands Everyone seems to be on the move. Kite/Ibis and Pelican/Eagle are a mile offshore near the south end of Highland. Admiralsnackbar and Windtern 2 mi ahead of them down the coast. Waterdawg and Blue do not seem to be pressing their “OK” button, so it is not clear where they are. Dietireds and Albatross have left Flamingo and are headed toward the shallow channel to the East. Good luck to them!

Clewless/The Hammer are a 6 mi north of Hog Key. At the rate they are moving, they may not finish the EC by Saturday noon—the official end of the EC. 10:00 Update Waterdawg is on the move a mile south of NW Cape.

WaterTribe 2018 Everglades Challenge Update 17

AI 2 Island Jim Czarnowski has finished.

TI Islands Dietireds and Albatross have finished. Admiralsnackbar and Windtern are nearing Flamingo marina on the FL Bay side (they came around Cape Sable.) Kite/Ibis and Pelican/Eagle are almost through Whitewater Bay. Clewless/TheHammer have just entered Whitewater Bay from Ponce de Leon Bay. Everyone is doing great! They can almost see the finish line.

I still look with awe at all the work that people coming through Whitewater Bay have to do to get their supplies, gear, and boat over to the saltwater side. Crazy! Admiralsnackbar and Windtern started about the same time as Kite/Ibis and Pelican/Eagle. The former went around Cape Sable and got into Flamingo at least an hour earlier than the others going through Whitewater Bay. When Kite/Ibis and Pelican/Eagle do get into Flamingo, they need to unload their boats at the fresh water docks and haul everything over land (about 800') to the FL Bay side. Crazy! Pelican has done the EC many times. He ought to know better.

WaterTribe 2018 Everglades Challenge Update 18

TI Islands Waterdawg is through the shallow channel and in deeper water to the east. He will finish in 2-3 hours (midnight or later). Everyone else is on the saltwater side of Flamingo marina: Admiralsnackbar, Windtern, Kite/Ibis, Pelican/Eagle, and Clewless/TheHammer. One more day of EC for these sailors. There is always a celebration at the Bay Cove Resort around 11 AM, Saturday, to rejoice for the end of the race and to honor the participants. If you want to join the festivities, Bay Cove is at 99446 Overseas Hwy. Key Largo, FL

WaterTribe 2018 Everglades Challenge Update 19

TI Islands Admiralsnackbar, Windtern, and Pelican/Eagle are out early about a mile into FL Bay. They will shortly turn east and head to the shallow channel through the shallows. Kite/Ibis and Clewless/TheHammer are undoubtedly readying to move out. The tide is still rising at Flamingo, so it will be rising east of Flamingo for several hours (the tide flows in from the Gulf of Mexico.) Not much of a rise: in Flamingo, hi tide at 9:12 AM of 1.1’. Lo tide at 4 PM of about 5”. It is cool: 45 deg F and, essentially, no wind (pedal, pedal, pedal). Good luck to all as they progress the 35 mi east to the finish. Update as I write this. Admiralsnackbar and Windtern have turned east. Pelican/Eagle are still in the channel south of Flamingo. Maybe they are waiting for Ibis/Kite.

WaterTribe Ultimate Florida 2018 Update 1

TI Island My apologies to Bacon! Bacon is in a different race, the Ultimate Florida 2018. This race starts the same as the 2018 EC, tracks the same to Key Largo, but then continues around FL finishing back at Ft Desoto. Bacon finished the first leg to Key Largo in 5 days 7 hours 50 min, which meant he got to Key Largo about the same time as Albatross and PenquinMan. This race has a time limit of about 30 days. SewSew (with Synergy) was in this race but crashed early on. Only one other person is in this race: a woman kayaker-Hiawashe. She is currently paddling through Whitewater Bay. I will follow her also.

WaterTribe Ultimate Florida 2018 Update 4

Bacon has left the Bay Cove Motel Finish and is about 42 mi NNE in near Key Biscayne. He is on the 565 mile section, which finishes near Jacksonville, FL. He doing the WaterTribe Ultimate Florida, a circumnavigation of Florida. We will check in on him occasionally during this monumental challenge that he has taken on.

Hiawashe has finished this leg about 11 AM today...just in time for the celebration.

Wow, what a day for Bacon! He made over 65 miles from Key Largo, north through Miami, and on up to Oleta River State Park. Impressive!!! I think he is still looking for a place to set up camp. Outstanding effort.

Bacon already has 16 miles on today. He is determined! Currently he is just north of Ft Lauderdale.

Hiawashe is also on the move. She is near US1 in Barnes Sound.

WaterTribe Ultimate Florida 2018 Update 7

11:30 PM Bacon is north of Lake Worth. He has put on over 55 mi today with lots of twists and turns in the inland waterway. He is showing no sign of stopping!

Hiawashe is also still on the move in Biscayne Bay a mile or so south of Dinner Key where she might be able to stop overnight.

These people are determined, to say the least.

WaterTribe Ultimate Florida 2018 Update 8

12:15 AM, Monday morning Bacon has pulled into a small island (Palmsicle Island/Fisherman Island--not far from President Trump's Mar-a-Lago Club)

Hiawashe is a still moving. 12:30 AM She stopping at a brightly light area along Rickenbacker Causeway in Miami. Some derelicts hang out there, so I hope she will be OK.

I'm not in favor of carrying guns, but, in Hiawashe's case, I hope she has some protection. You have to be realistic in the world we live in. Bacon and Hiawashe are amazing. Wow!

It is 7:00 AM here, but still dark with daylight savings in effect. Nevertheless, I was happy to see Hiawashe on the move already. She is off highly developed Brickell Key. People out on their balcony over looking Biscayne Bay may see her down below as she begins her day and daylight dawns. She is paddling along downtown Miami.

Bacon is also moving, I guess. He is still very close to Palmsicle Island.

WaterTribe Ultimate Florida 2018 Update 10

10:00 PM

Bacon is North of Jupiter, FL. (Roughly, even with the north end of Lake Okeechobee.) I think he is getting ready to shut down. Another excellent day.

Hiawashe is moving about a day and a half further back down the coast immediately south of Commercial Blvd. in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea. She is still moving. And, she is one tough lady.
