Post subject:  More of Why I love my Island

I have posted several new videos of sail/surfing and dolphins. I have also made the orginal versions that I uploaded available for download. All but the Here I is video are large 100+ meg files so a fast connection and loads of patience are required but they look good full screen on my 32" hd. Google reduces them to ipod size and then blows them up when they stream.

Roady you Old Salt
I got a long way to go before I even get close to you so you tell me what comes next, is it as addicting and fun as it seems, I've been yaking for a year now and everytime out is the best time ever :D

Those of you experiencing rudder pop out problems might want to check out another gwiz solution I posted here.

I also made a hiking stick from pvc that slides over the short piece attached to my rudder control lever but I haven't got the bend quite right, will post when I do.

My lastest sparyshield design is the best to date but I think it needs to be a little longer and narrower. I tried starting with a square and then orientating it as a diamond on the hull. I also ran my local fabric store out of 20mil vinyl so I have to wait for them to reorder or find another fabric store.

I believe I now know what I want but unfortunally its going to be more complicated.

Gwiz,

Neat idea that boom! Show us more, more!

Could you give us some heads-up on your new spray skirt thoughts?

I'm ready to make up to 4 new ones in the next few days. I'm planning on using suncloth as it stops the spray but drains quickly and lets the wind through.

I'm toying with the idea of using some 1/2" pvc pipe to hold the shape better and a quick release line to hold them out on the akas.

As always, mine will keep the front hatch clear.

Aloha,

Hi gwiz,

I've also been starting to fold the seat forward and sit back on the short deck ledge, but haven't got your plush accommodations! The performance really picks up, and the photo angle is better too! I may have to copy your "tiller" to allow a little more roaming room. Fortunately I do this on the local lake so If I fall off, it isn't too far to swim -- been meaning to get a tether though. 8)

Here's a few late afternoon pics from the deck:

I am planning to get about 2 1/2 yards this time and use all the scrap pieces for reinforcement around the edges using glue. I am thinking I can run a double strip about 3 to 4' wide and then fold the vinyl over it to make the edge 4 layers thick. I also might run a vinyl and wire clothes line all the way around the outside edge at the fold.

I keep all the stuff I am going to use while sailing in my front hatch so it is empty when I sail. Helps keep the nose high. I also have the front bunj where I can quick disconnect if needed.

Roady I need to come up with a tether as well but since I most always have a line or 2 wrapped around my right hand and don't want any more lines to trip over while hopping around I haven't yet.

The nice part about the Island is that if you fall out of the cockpit you will windup on an ama. The only time it gets dicey is when I film with my Kodak and I usally have it tied off so as long as I hold on to my camera I will be alright.

The other real dicey thing is to walk out on the back deck to fix a rudder problem which always occurs in the worst of conditions. I usally sit with 1 leg under the sail lines so that the yak won't squirt out from under me as it rolls in the rough stuff.

In cold weather I wear a wet suit, you can't sink in those without weights. The only time I have nearly fell out was while trying to reach around my back to find my wet suit zipper line, while putting it on.

I landed with my legs in the hull and an arm over an ama. My back was in the water and of course the zipper was wide open so I got my back good and wet.

Gwiz,

I use 1/2"drip line (hose) on another project, inside of pool noodles to protect them from the rope running through them. (We hang the backs of the AI's cradled by the pool noodles.) I'm wondering if that would protect your spray skirt ends from the rope?

All our AI's have surf board leashes that have worked great! 15' (I think) with one end velcroed around the rear aka and the other end around one of the seat buckles or on our ankle. They came with a can coozy that holds the excess well. I've changed a rudder pin in the water in 5' waves with it on in comfort.

Please be careful out there! We can't afford to loose you and your contributions to the AI community.

Aloha,

Kayaking Bob
