Boat speed calculations

I agree with all of the responses above...
The 'displacement hull speed' calculation is just the speed of the longitudinal (single fore-aft) wave generated by the displacement of the hull.
To get the AI hull to truly 'plane' the hull would have to get 'away' from the wave generated. That's why there is a mid-ground speed experienced by power boats when accelerating faster than the displacement wave. You might have seen a power boat with an excessive upward pitch while trying to get up to plane. The boat is essentially trying to climb up-out-and away from the wave which it is shoving forward.
Another factor is the lengths of wave encountered as the AI speeds up...the hull tries to bury its bow into the next crest which really decelerates the hull. The kayak then has to shed the mass of the wave
on the bow. Any wave lengths less than the hull length could possibly be overridden as the hull is suspended over several wave crests. But if the wave lengths are longer than 16 ft there is a good chance on plunging into a crest.
So to finish my reponses...I think that all of us are correct...but we may be talking about several different aspects of the same thing.l
