Howdy!

Hobie has a problem with the name of our craft, and I think they realize it. My beloved and I have a similar problem in how to refer to our boats...

In conversation with ourselves and others, the name "Adventure Island" has a lot of syllables. It simply doesn't roll of the tongue, and is easily confused with the "Adventure", from which it evolved. It's also not descriptive.

We personally use the term "AI", which many on this forum also use. But this isn't a descriptive acronym and confuses others when we talk about it.

As mentioned earlier, I suspect Hobie knows this is a problem for such a unique boat. Their sales literature floats the term "sail yak", which accurately describes it. yet sux. "Sail yak" sounds like a clumsey tongue twister. Try saying it as fast as you can 10 times.

Hobie is perhaps stuck with the model moniker of "Adventure Island". Are we as enthusiasts similarly stuck with "Adventure Island", "AI", or worst of all "Sail Yak"?

What do you refer to your AI's as? Do you have a totally cool descriptive name which is easily spoken?

The winner of this contest gets a great BBQ when passing thru Jackson Hole.

Happy Trails!

Chris

Great Idea!! I started a thread awhile back asking people what they had named the AI or their Hobie craft? I christened my AI w/ champagne to assure good Luck. I always wondered why Hobie went with "Adventure Island" for the model Name and must confess I don't like to tell people what it is called when they ask. I prefer to tell them 16 ft Hobie Sailing Trimaran. Maybe Yakmaran or Triyak . I do like adventure as a name but it is taken but as the AI is based on the Adventure Hull I do think that the name must have it in it.

Adventure ?

Wow!

Great suggestions!

TriYak is magically descriptive, but misses the sail.

FlyYak, nails the sail but misses the unique trihull aspect.

Flying TriYak would remind me of Flying Wallendas tightrope catastrophes.

We're getting close.

Keep the ideas coming. Anybody who enters this contest or not wins a free BBQ when visiting Jackson Hole. I'll never announce a winner. This contest goes until this board goes down.

Since Hobie seriously monitors this board, you can expect to see their sales brochures and website reflect our more elegant monikers for the Hobie Adventure Island/AI/Sail Yak.

Isn't this cool? We're as rabidly loyal as Harley Davidson bikers, but don't have to wear black leather or wave flags. We deserve a better nickname. Something as succinct and intuitive as "bikers".

Happy Trails!

Chris

Adventure Proa

From Wikipedia
The design and names for the trimaran components are derived from the original proa constructed by native Pacific Islanders. The first trimarans were built by indigenous Polynesians almost 4,000 years ago, and much of the current terminology is inherited from them Multihull sailboats (catamarans and trimarans)

I reply:
A very good idea. I love the idea of giving homage to the past. However, proas were and are a main hull with only one outrigger. "Proas" are defined that way, and it would be wrong to redefine the term. Proas were designed to go long distances with steadily consistent trade winds. Tacking and jibing are very complicated, time consuming affairs. Very unlike the Hobie Adventure Island/AI/Sail Yak.

ElementAI, please go back to your original thread and tell us what it was like sailing your Adventure Island/AI/Sail Yak the first time! To you and everyone else, keep delving for a new nickname.

Happy Trails!

Chris

What about the "S" from sail, then the obvious "tri" followed by a "k" from kayak to make "STRIKE" or "STRIKER" ? (The added "e" or "er"at the end for easier pronunciation.)
If you use the earlier mentioned Harley biker comparison, this would become "Hobie striker".

I'll throw one out. I was looking at something about building guitar chords.

Personally I just call mine "my Island", compared to other kayaks that is what it is, a fast moving Island of stability.
