:) Anway, while we're waiting...what features would you like to see on the new tandem AI?

Std Eqp:
1. Snap in/out seats like the PA.
2. Flat front cockpit (like a 2nd cargo area) to carry large heavy items like coolers on solo expeditions.

Opt Eqp:
1. Outfitting Framework (removable/adjustable/expandable) between x-bars and akas to attach accessories (and avoid drilling holes in boat). An angle frame with a horizontal surface to attach rod holders, electronic gear, etc. and vertical surface above gunwale with long slots to hold sliding hanging storage pockets, and attach other tethered gear.

C'mon guys lettum know whatcha want!!!

No bigger or heavier than current AI...Pirate

It is a tandem--it needs to be 2' longer than the current, single-seater AI. It will probably be heavier, but that depends (every double kayak I've ever seen was longer & heavier than its corresponding single.) If it is not longer than the AI, then it is limited to day sailing--multiday camping trips would likely be out. Since it is a tandem, usually you would have 2 people handling it. What is the length of the prototypes? Pictures I've seen definitely look like the prototypes are at least 17-18'.

Yeah, I'd say half the weight would be better. Oh, and a top smooth water sailing speed in the 20 knot range. Oh, and I want to stay dry the whole time. And most important: titanium alloy rudder pins!

Pirate & Chekika,

RE: New Tandem length & weight

Would be nice if length & weight of hull was < 19' & 85 lbs respectively. Whatever it is, it will probably mean less storage space in the forward hatch and rear cargo areas than what we have now in the AI. This is why the front cockpit area "screams" to be able to do more than just carry another person. With a flat surface it could carry a big cooler and extra gear that would help center the load instead of having the stern sitting so low.

Scratch my idea for "Outfitting Framework". The same could be accomplished if Hobie modifed x-bar/aka joints to accomodate an accessory rail--a rectangular rail frame around the cockpit that would lift off when the aka pin is removed. The rail would eliminate/reduce the need to drill holes/fill old holes in the boat everytime you added or changed accessories. Plus it would make it a lot easier to reach and tighten fasteners. :D

Me again, with one more thing that could help.

A tube (on top of gunwale, closed off from hull) to provide accessability to rudder lines.

Hey Tom,

Ya got anything down there that might compete with the new Hobie Tandem?

Oops! Better respond to my private email address.

Not if Hobie does the things on my wish list above.

Aye to that.

I guess we all know how long it will be; chances are small it will be much different than the prototype (or made of something other than plastic). Thus it will be quite a bit bigger and MUCH heavier. The extra length means extra plastic and all the vertical area around the front seat and extra scuppers and drivewell will add to that. Heavy it will be.

Still, considering the photo's and vids of the prototype, it will be a great boat. The length and distributed weight can make it feel a ship. The movement through the water I have seen on the vids is great. The versatality in different options of use will be incredible.

Here are my wishes:

1. Stable enough to be used as an tandem kayak, even with a less experienced passenger.
2. Stearing and sheeting from both seats
3. If wish 2 doesn't come true, than some other smart trick so the dagger can be used when sailing solo
4. AI tramps fit, or tramps for the tandem AI
5. A roller furling jib solution (keeping furling of the main intact) for both AI and tandem AI, for the tandem AI equiped with bowsprit
6. Ability to put 2 small kids in front, like in the oasis
7. If daggerboard solution is conform the prototype, it should be shaped such that weeds will not become stuck in the dagger well, killing speed. If that is impossible some smart underwater plug solution that can be put on and off while on the water.

Most of these wishes probably will come true, but I'm a little concerned about some. Anyhow, this will be a great boat.

Hmm...

With several prototypes built with hulls looking similar in design, shape and size I fear some items on the wish list are not going to happen. But make good feedback anyway.

The report from Watertribe was the AI2 was 18feet 7inchs. With a built in daggar board and seats for 2 it is sure to be heavier than the Island. Especially if it is plastic. The 2 tone prototype at watertribe event was definitely fiberglass - so who knows what the final material will be. Maybe there will be a choice.

Length and weight may mean a lot of Hobie trailers sold to go with the AI2 ship. We'll see.

mmmmmm.....nuthing bigger will fit my garage racks and I am getting weaker with age to be able to lift heavier yaks onto the roof racks... Looks to me like I'll just have to resort to ditching the wench. ..Pirate

A tandem AI made drier either from spray deflectors like Kayaking Bob's design or with a bow with a built in rigid shape that splits the swells and keeps the cockpit fairly dry.
I like the ideas posted earlier - the front seat compartment being flat bottomed for gear storage for expeditions or strong enough for a place to stand. and the Tramps coming standard. I don't care if it's appropriately longer and heavier up to 20 feet (I have a trailer for my AI that I could adapt)...as long as there is a HD cart with fat tires than can allow it to be pulled a good distance across beach sand.
