]Been playing with some new software for displaying my sidescan sonar data. It creates geo-referenced overlays in Google Earth. This is a small run up Burns Bay off the Lane Cove River as a test. The images are about 10MB total to download. The bigger run up the river was about 180MB. Some people may like to download that much. I'll play more with the software to make it a bit smaller. You’ll need Google Earth installed, then click here- http://www.pixel-landscapes.com/Sidescan/SonarTRX-R00005-20110127-074135/doc.kml (click Open. Google Earth should load and zoom to the correct area) Homebush Bay Shipwreck (Added 16/feb/2011) http://www.pixel-landscapes.com/Sidescan/Homebush_Shipwreck/SonarTRX-R00010-20110215-095820/doc.kml Meadowbank Railway Bridge (Added 16/feb/2011) http://www.pixel-landscapes.com/Sidescan/MeadowBank%20Railway%20Bridge/SonarTRX-R00010-20110215-101009/doc.kml If look at Temporary Places on the left hand side you should see a place called SonarTRX-R00005-20110127-074135. The blue lines on the sonar images can be removed by deselecting Areas. This will make the sonar images less cluttered and easier to see. The transparency of the images can be changed with the slider bar directly below the Places pane on the left. If you look you can see the photographs of the moored boats in the Google Earth photo and the sonar images showing the bottom with mooring chain markings in the mud/sand. In some cases you can also see part of the hull in the sonar images. Obviously the boats move about a little due to tide and wind. The watermarks are because I'm using a trial license at the moment while waiting for my USB dongle thing to turn up. Now I'm off to bed.... |

What brand/model side scan did you use? What software did you need to import the scans into Google Earth? Is there an Internet site which explains the technique? Thanks TIDALWAVE |

Added 2 more up in the original post... Don't forget to use the slider to change the transparency of the sonar pic. These ones are are nice and small and just contain areas of interest. |

I have used several GPS devices and software to export KML files to Google Earth. This is the first time I have seen it used in conjunction with side scan sonar. Pretty cool application of the technology. |
