Just watched the attached documentary on Donald Crowhurst, a competitor in the solo non stop around the world ocean race. An incredible story that I'm sure you sailors will enjoy. It starts out a bit slow but well worth the effort.

P.S. For those who like doco's, how good is this website ?

I read a book about him shortly after it happened, I was following all the press reports at the time. Robin Knox-Johston's voyage is all the more credible, he achieved so much with so little support, mainly through self reliance. I went to an evening with him recently, a very amusing speaker, he is now 'sponsored' with some bottles by a whiskey firm for his evening tipple! He said he asked the firm what he should drink the other nine months of the year. Very amusing!

That would have been an interesting evening. Out of all the 9 sailors in the Golden Globe, it seemed like Knox-Johnson came out of it with the most credibility. Poor old Crowhurst was forced to just kept digging a bigger hole for himself until there was no way out.

Thanks for posting. You do have to admire people who give it a go like that. The rest of just live out long, mostly boring lives, and, when we come to the end, our lives won't seem to us to have been any longer than life was perceived to be by those that lived shorter, more intense lives. ... I can sense that, but I can't really live any other way. I'll continue taking smaller trips, smaller risks and reading about those with more courage. That said, Crowhurst seemed to be a tragic figure from the get-go, with ambitions beyond his means and/or ability. I suspect that the other guys may have been in better positions to equip themselves with proper boats and provisions.

Agree Ted. Crowhurst seemed like a pretty nice bloke who was sort of backed into a corner and couldn't find an easy escape. I liked the way the French bloke got close to home, thought about the wife and kids waiting for him......then......( I won't spoil it for those who haven't seen it yet ).

This was 1968, right? And, the Frenchman was a poet and a philosopher. You think maybe he brought a we bit too much acid along for the trip?

Or loose the log book. 'Oh dear.....I was out on the deck writting in my log and got hit by a feak wave ! ' What's wrong with that ?

In fact, here is a conspirousy theory for you, HE WAS NEVER FOUND !!!

Perhaps he is hiding out in a cave somewhere playing cards with Harold Holt and Elvis !
