An underwater housing is worth more than my Canon Powershot, which is waterproof and reasonably shock resistant. It's a few years old and cost $300 or so at the time. The new model or equivalent cameras by Panasonic and others are better and could easily survive a kite flight, even with a pretty bad landing.

The issue is not just the camera, as the radio control receiver and servos, the TV transmitter, andthe wiring all need to be waterproof too (although I did have a fresh water dunking which killed a camera and everything else recovered after considerable effort). If I'd known I was getting a Ti, the replacement camera would have been a waterproof one!

Here is a shot from the camera under the kite - sorry the subject material is boring.

I prefer working with my 40 foot mast. Photos are then possible in all conditions.

Tony, that is an awesome setup and great pics!

Here is a shot of how the kite looks like along with the accompanying reverse shot from the kite itself taken at the exact same moment.

Note that there is no rig there yet and I was fortunate that a few frames were usable. Still waiting for the good weather to come to try out the rig (hopefully this weekend!). Will report on how it goes and whether it was stable enough.

Slaughter, that is a great waterproof camera. I am struggling between the waterproof choices since we can either have a great camera with an LCD and good lens (e.g., Panasonic, Olympus) or a wide-angle lens on a small camera with no LCD (e.g., Contour, GoPro), but not both on the same hardware.

However, apparently the new Olympus Tough TG-1 will fill that gap as it has a very nice waterproof fisheye lens addon. It is supposed to be out this month.

BTW, saw the skymax mast pics. They look awesome.

Rusty, it was a lot of fun. I only went through one of them in the TI. The others are too narrow. But next time I will fold in the amas to give it a shot and go along with the Oasis.

Tony - Great stuff. I've always been interested in attaching a GoPro to a RC Helicopers after seeing plenty of YouTubes but this looks like a far cheaper and more controllable option.

pesan - you may not realise but I think your last photo just went to the top of the list for this comp. That brand new TI is as good as yours.
If the sea is rough, I usually attach my camera via a Gimbal mount which seems to give a better representation of what we are seeing.

Right across the river from me! Taken a few years ago by the looks of it. The cafe is being rebuilt here.

Sure you don't live a bit south-west behind the razor wire? LOL

It is a great kite shot Slaughter. I'd only call it the winner if it was PULLING the boat too.

Slaughter, that's a very nice setup to stabilize the camera!

Nohuhu, as for the photo, lets pretend it was pulling the boat sideways at about 25mph until we lowered the daggerboard in order to calmly take that shot. :o

OK. In fact, let's pretend you sailed it right through the cave.

Great footage pesan, especially the "lost camera" POV sequence. Hilarious!

We enjoyed the happy ending.
