I tickled one on the back with my daggerboard last week while I was slowly snaking my way out of Chokoloskee in the Everglades. First I felt the daggerboard move just a little bit and then all of a sudden the back of my heavily loaded AI was hit hard upward and then a wake a little more than a foot was made in a large circle around the back of my boat. I never saw it but am pretty sure it was a Manatee. It sure surprised the heck out of me. Bosab, where was this picture taken? I wouldn't mind heading out there in a few weeks to see them. That's why I was trying to figure out if they were munching on Bob's bungees or Did he bag them both and had them on his fish stringer? They look like trophies to me.

This right off the campground at Fort Desoto near the start of the EC. There are many other places that Manatee congregate in the spring. Its mating time so the males herd up the cows. These two were small ones and probably just pretending. No telling how the boat fits into that equation. WHen the big ones start into the serious stuff you have to be a bit careful as a large male could easily flip a kayak out of the water if you were in the wrong place at the wrong time. THe little boat basin off the haul over canal north of cocoa beach is another herding up spot. |

Belated answer to your question Slaughter. The photo was at the Goolwa Caravan Park in South Australia.  The creek pictured is 100m long and connects to the River Murray at Goolwa. |
