Post subject:  TI amas unbalanced.

Hello all. I'm new to this forum an have a question. I have a new Hobie TI and I notice that one of the amas is much heavier in the front. So much so that when trying to carry them both it is not possible without risking scraping the one of the one that's out of balance on the parking lot, stones etc. Even while trying to torque the handle as hard as I can to compensate for this.

This makes it difficult to carry the amas from car to water unless I carry the unbalanced one separately with both arms. I am also concerned that this will adversely affect sailing performance when that side is downwind. I have inspected the ama the best I can and I can't see any obvious increased plastic thickness on that side and there is no adjustment for the handle. (both amas are bone dry).

I contacted my dealer who contacted Hobie about this and he said there was nothing that could be done.

Does anyone have any thoughts about this? Is there any simple correction that is recommended? Has anyone encountered similar problems?
Thank you in advance for your reply.

Hi Terrapin,

I suppose you could try some GFELX and lead fishing weights inside the tail of that Ama, but other than that, (or moving the handle), there is not much you can do.

Most folks would ignore it unless the upwind Ama starts pulling off the Akas due to the overhanging weight. Once that Ama is in the water, it will not matter.

However, you might inspect the Amas to ensure they are straight and there is no heat warpage due to transport or storage. Bent Amas can effect your balance and tracking, in which case they should be reshaped or replaced.

So, if you are sailing in circles, you should have it fixed.
