I made a barber hauler sometime ago, I use it mostly when I'm running the TI solo, the winds are light, or I plan on a long downwind run.
You are correct, the BH can be used as a traveler and will improve upwind performance slightly.

port side, running downwind.

starboard side, same time, running downwind.

close reach, acting as a traveler.

i have an extra shackle on the sheet pulley and attach the barber hauler to it using a ss hook tied to the BH with a alpine butterfly knot

cheers

Have you found using the metal padeye on the ama a better location to attach and pull from than the plastic eye near the rear of the ama?

Kind of, the rear padeye torques the ama a lot while the center padeye doesn't. The rear padeye also doesn't interfere with hakas or tramps and the center one does to some extent. The ideal location would be on the rear aka, I think.

For as much as I've used it, the center position works just fine.

Good point about the boom vs' BH Tidalwave and NOHUHU. I'm still living in denial that it will never happen to me. ( I hope the camera's rolling when it does )
